They could eventually overcome the Vietnamese, but I expect the Chinese would lose a lot more people in the process.

Recently watched the film Indochine.  It was released in 91 and the French had the cooperation of Vietnames gov't.  It has a lefty slant to it but it does give some idea of the structure of VN from the 1920's to 1954.  It is subtitled so us old deaf guys can enjoy it too.

The United States In Vietnam.  An analysis in depth of the history of America's involvement in Vietnam.  By George McTurnan Kahin & John W. Lewis.  Copyright 1967.  66-21593

It has some very interesting info regarding the fustercluck that described the political situation there.

I have been able to start talking about the camping trip the last couple of years to people who are genuinely interested.

However, part of the reluctance I had was due to my own ignorance of the history surrounding the war.  Opinions being like assholes and we have one of one and many others to spare...   I have done a lot of reading and buying books that deal with history of VN, history of the war and recently a late sixties book that really dug into the post WW2 intel in VN.  It was heavily documented and completely ignored at the time.  It helped with a lot of the questions of our involvement and who the factions were in the war as it developed before we got more directly involved.

Funny..  "bring an old fat deaf vet to school day"  That cracks me up.  Yeah, the twisted mind is still working after a fashion.

My kids have never specifically asked.  I haven't exactly been forthcoming about any of it either.  Pretty much a mine field between us on that subject in the past, mostly on my part.  They just knew not to step there.

My daughter only knew me as that picture over there on the end table when I got back.....   One day recently, she was tagging along on a walk with the wife and I and her boyfriend was relating some of his father's experience in VN.  Apparently he was armor down south.  Anyway, he wasn't quite getting the gist of what ...

Jim, have you tried any 82nd arty sites?  If you know his home state then try zabasearch.com since people don't usually move all that far from home.

Once again, sorry about the mess I left you in Chu Lai.

The remark about the open flash suppressor reminded me that there were at least a couple of those still in my unit in 69.  I recall someone using it to break bands on a crate.

I have to do that and I don't even have that many slides.  My all-in-one machine took a shit but still scans great.  I generally only use it for documents though.  Damn printers anyway.....use them and they kill you with the cost of ink, then if you dont' use them.........  they dry up and cost more to fix than buying a new one.

My squad leader made damn sure everyone cleaned their weapons.  Hardly had to though since we had a good appreciation for a clean one.  It wasn't hard to give it a quick clean what with pushing out one pin and then give it a flip and a wipe with a q-tip and some LSA.  We had several rifle cleaning kits amongst us to do the bores.

yeah....what He said...

I recall a very in depth discussion of the M16 that took place a while back but don't remember where.  In it, it was affirmed that we were sold a bill of goods on the M16.

Some early problems were with the ammunition.  There were some manufacturing probs that caused jams and that went away with better fitting brass.  Another was the quality of the powder.  Seems that that would cause a bad contamination problem with the bolt assembly.  I think the bad powder and brass made it to nam to save money since they already knew about it and found a work around.

Operation Chopper occurred on January 12, 1962 and was the first time US forces participated in major combat in the Vietnam War. This operation heralded a new era of air mobility for the U.S. Army, which had been slowly growing as a concept since the Army formed twelve helicopter battalions in 1952 as a result of the Korean War. These new battalions eventually formed a sort of modern day cavalry for the Army.

Most of you already know that the momentos left by vets are collected and preserved. You may not be aware of the scope of this effort.  Visitors to the memorial began leaving sentimental items at the memorial at its opening. One story claims that this practice began during construction, when a Vietnam veteran threw the Purp...

Hell Greg,  I always thought they used a dart board and nailed a pie plate in the middle so only the low scores on the outside ever got counted.  Unless you bring in outside help and then they remove the pie plate and toss the dart while blindfolded.

The opinion of an outside, non VA shrink carries a lot of weight on a PTSD claim.  Think about this:  It is our usual state of mind to minimize our conditions because we have been taught from birth to be strong and manly and bear the pain.  This visit to the shrink will be a waste if you deny your actual inner turmoil.  This is a shrink you are visiting, drag out that bad attitude and the nest of snakes.  If you are sitting there being all stoic and uncommunicative, the shrink can't assess a damn thing and the paper will just reflect that you are just another lump.

damned if I know Frenchie, but Seattle?    More likely that could have happened if he flew out of McChord AFB just South of Tacoma which is 30 miles from Seattle.  So, Seattle = BS.  Tacoma McChord AFB = plausible.  I left for and returned from Vietnam at McChord AFB but flew over on a DC-8 stretch and returned on a Boeing 707 and both were commercially outfitted aircraft.

Also, you might ask him if it was a commercially outfitted craft.  They were wholly operated by the Air Force and there were no Flying Tiger versions though they did consider it.  They had no comfy seats and such, as they weren't configured that way more like cargo and paratroopers.   It is possible that he went over in jump...

I went to the one here in Tacoma WA several years back and yes, it was primarily made up of 6/31 brothers.  They were very inclusive and I had a good time with them.  The only other 4/31 attendee was General Sam Wetzel and we had some long conversations.  A fine gentleman for sure.

They really ought to put quotation marks around "light" since it was anything but for the individual.  Yeah, I know, it meant no heavy high maintenance machinery....  Just semi-disposable men.

That I looked up Rep. Mac Thornberry of Texas to find that he is a Republican is just evidence of my political bias.

What is not part of my bias is this;  (maybe not)  When you contact your rep or whatever, it would be a very rare instance where he actually did the research on the missing man.  The representative has a large staff who are the ones charged with doing the actual work on just about everything.   However, the rep could do better if his staff were trained in the kind of work ethic that require them to see a job through to the end and assure their boss that it was complete and accurate.  In the end, it's the rep's ass at election time and his utilization of his staff is a refletcion of what goes on...

It's yours to piss away or rat-hole or just be semi normal with.  As long as you don't go out there to the VA with a certification of being "cured" of being a fucked up vet, or commit felonies and get convicted of it, you can do what you like.  Big Brother is not watching.... mostly.
