Joe: When I filed my claim, I was luckier than winning the lottery as far as the VA is concerned. Diagnosed with prostate cancer Jan 12, 2009, filed my own claim with the VA. Wanted to make sure I did it right ( went over and over it) did not mail till Feb 9, 2009, that meant no payment for the month of Feb 2009. On Mar 31 2009 got my first direct depoist at 100% Disability, seven weeks from filing. End of April 2009 got an award letter stating what I would get monthly. In June 2009 had seed implants and monthly hormone shots. PSA has been less than .1 for the last 9 months.
The important parts to my story. First get checked for Prostate Cancer yearly. Second if you have an illness from the service file a claim as soon as possible don"t put it off. There is a Forum called "The Veterans Network" where you can recieve help with questions on claims.

Joe and Eddie, best of luck in getting your claims approved as quickly as possible. Hopefully, you will hit the lottery as Bob did. You guys paid the price and deserve to be appropriately compensated and given the best treatment available. |

How long a claim takes depends upon a couple of factors:
1. Which regional office is processing the claim. Some are better than others and some have less of a work load.
2. This is the most important consideration! HOW WELL YOU DOCUMENTED YOUR CLAIM! That VA adudicator knows nothing more about your claim that what you sent him. The ONLY thing he's required to do is get copies of your VA medical records and I, personally, would not assume he'll do so.
I hope you sent him everything you have, with your name and claim number in the upper right-hand corner of every scrap of paper; medical history forms with diagnoses and GAF scores highlighted, including those you got from VA records release; written proof of your service; a personal letter from you, family member, co-workers and/or bosses about how your service has affected the rest of your life (not a retelling of service history) and I pray you didn't send any original documents at all, because they do tend to get lost and you'll have to replace them. Moreover, I hope you fully documented the service connection to all you claim.
If you've done that, your claim should sail through, hindered only by the caseworkers work load. If not, you need to get those things, organize them, add a cover letter and send them along as "addtional information" on your claim.
When you get back your first letter from them, which will be an acknowledgement that they received it, pay careful attention to where they list what they received from you. If anything is missing from that list, replace it immediately with new copies, also sent as additional information.
Remember...the easier you can make that persons job, the more likely you are to get a favorable ruling. Too often, Veterans simply fill out a claims form, shove a few odd papers into an envelope, and suppose the VA owes them something. All they're doing is shooting down their own claim down. The burden of proof is on YOU, not them.

Does anyone know or have ever heard that a Vet with 100% disability is told how they can spend their money and account for what they spend it on? This came up in a discussion the other day. |

It's yours to piss away or rat-hole or just be semi normal with. As long as you don't go out there to the VA with a certification of being "cured" of being a fucked up vet, or commit felonies and get convicted of it, you can do what you like. Big Brother is not watching.... mostly. |

along the same lines. Congress is trying to limit what school the veteran today can spend his 9/11 GI bill at. Seems like a significant number of veterans are choosing to go to online schools. Congress also wants to combine PELL grants and the 9/11 GI bill together so both will equal the percentage amount that colleges can't go over. right now all colleges must have at least 10% of their tuition from other than federal funding. Doesn't say much for congress making their own value judgements that affect the veteran.
