Quoted from Greyeagle, posted September 12th, 2012, 12:13am at hereHeck, I'm deaf in one ear and can't hear out of the other one......
Who do I need to see to get disability for hearing loss... Got my right ear blown out in Nam. Never have been able to hear in that one... the other one is going fast.

First thing you should do is go to the VA in your town or the closest town that has a VA hospital or a VA officew and file a claim with a VA representative....you will be a examined and a determination will be made in regards to your claim... process will take months ... Take whatever paper work you have in your possession (Purple Heart order, CIB Orders, DD214 etc) that will back up your case. Once you get the ball rolling....stay on top of things..dont assume it will get done. That is what i did.

Amazingly got my DD214 updated, Had no medals from Vietnam and the Bronze Star that was originnally sent me about a year after I got back from Vietnam had the wrong serial number as the last two numbers were reversed. Sent info for correction and got back in just couple of months!!!Sent me another Bronze Star! Also added Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal with 4 bronze service stars. Also stated awarded the RVN Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation. |

Lloyd, I second Frenchie's WOW & congratulations. Its great to see you guys recognized, finally. How do you go about requesting an update to your DD 214? The one I received upon separation at Ft. Bragg on 6 Nov. 69 was missing a couple of things, but, I was in such a hurry to get out of there I didn't question it. And, never have. But now, 43 years later, I would like to have it updated. Thanks for any help you can provide. |

In case you hadnt heard from Lloyd.. to update your DD214, i started my process by going to the va hosp and talked to a representative there...this would be the same guy that would assist you file any claim with the VA ... normally it is a volunteer from VFW or American Legion etc. You should be aware once everything is corrected, you will NOT receive a new DD214. You will receive a separate paper (i forget the form number) that will reflect the corrections or changes.
WHen i was discharged i was told over and over how i should take my form to the local Hall of Records and have the form recorded...same thing with the revised form...this is important in case you lose your copy ...there will always be one at the hall of record for you to get a copy as needed |

Since I started this, thought I would let you guys know what has happened. Got a reply back fairly quick stating that my request to update my DD214 would take approximately 12 months to correct due to the quantity of requests made for correction to discharges. So will have just wait and see what happens. |

I'm not sure what advantage having an updated DD214 offers, unless the items affect eligibilty for benefits. If it is just the number of requests for changes that make a year long line, then perhaps the workers might be better used to process disability claims. |

in my case i had a couple minor things not shown on my DD214 but i had a Bronze Star medal(with V device) with orders not shown on the form. So i requested the medals i never received and corrected what needed to be corrected on my DD214
Its almost like the CIB ...no big deal either but i know guys go berserk if that award is not shown on their DD214 ...it is what defines what we were... 11B Grunts ..
As far as time? i think the one year time frame is the over stated...my guess is that its the LONGEST time that is expected to take to process it...i dont know of course (other than my own experience) but i think 4-5 months is more realistic |

I thought too that whats the use after all these years, but after all the political crap I had to listen to and several people coming up with stolen valor credentials, I figured if I ever ran for a political office, I wanted my records to be set straight and have someone say I had not earned a specific award. Personally, I feel I did my job right, why couldn't some of those "REMF" clerks do their job right. I sent my DD214 back at least twice when getting discharged and they still had it screwed up, and a line of 40 guys wanting to get out of the army standing behind me starting to get nasty about holding up the line. |

Thanks for the info on updating your DD214. I'm going to start the process and Ill let you know how it goes. Teacher, I hope Frenchie is right and 12 mos. is the max time, and that you hear back a lot sooner. Yea, I know what you mean about having a bunch of guys behind you waiting to get out. I was one of those guys at Ft. Bragg. Even though my 214 wasn't right, which I mentioned, I wasn't about to hang around. At that time, I just wanted to put Ft. Bragg and the Army as far behind me as quickly as I could. |

The form I used was DD FORM 149. At which time when they sent me corrected DD Form 215 with the awards. I believe it was for me about 6 - 7 months. |
