Our unit (4th battalion) pulled guard duty there and it was commonly referred to as Disneyland...we slept on a regular bed and had midnight snacks (ice cream etc)... NO im not making it up.
They seemed to have a LOT of officers there for whatever reason and while there we had to deal with a typhoon....this was in summer of 1968. |

Frenchie,
This was at the headquarters of the 3rd Marine Amphibious Force or 3rd MAF as it was called. It was in August of 68. There were 15 generals and 30 colonels at that location. I got to go also because I was getting short. It's funny you mention this because I was telling someone yesterday after church about being in Da Nang at that time and eating ice cream even at breakfast.

I think we were there a couple weeks and heck i even SAW teh bowling alley in Da Nang...i thought i was in heaven ....Disneyland it was...midnight snacks (we relieved each other) and real beds!!!!! we pulled our guard duty up in a tower.... My buddy Larry Howard was at another location (in town?) and actually sang C/W tunes to a lady having a baby.... Larry is very country ... yes, it was unbelievable but TRUE
Frankly i dont recall seeing ANY marines ...CRS of much else there....cept the gooks filling sand bags for us (well i mean the local us troops - certainly not for me) |

I remember pulling guard in a tower also on a main highway. Just sat up there and watched the world go by. We pulled guard from 9 to midnight and then again from 3 to 6 am. The next night we were on guard from midnight to 3 am. We flew up there from Ross or Baldy on Marine CH 46's. Some guys that went up with me from Charlie company got into a big fight with some Marines at the EM club. I also bumped into General Cushman (4 stars ) literally in the PX. He had this skow on his face and I did an about face and quickly disappeared!!!!

I think they called it a Battalion Honor Guard and I remember going up on Aug 19, 1968 for Chu Lai. I believe we stayed at Camp Horn and the duty was a piece of cake; as I remember we only worked at night and we either pulled bunker duty or a listening post, or they had us on patrol - all easy stuff. Think I got back to my unit around the 29th, so it was like R & R for 10 days. |

I was with the assassins recon of 3/21 and I went in with some guys from diffrent units for the honor guard. I had no clue why I was sent in for this duty, but like everybody said it was a great and safe!!!! place to stay temporaraily. We looked for the off limits places on the bulletin board and thats where we would gp for awhile during the day. Does the "Blue room" in Danang sound familiar to any of you grunts ? Take care, Bert |

I didn't get sent to Camp Horn but for the entire month of June 1971 I was sent to the 95th Evac for guard duty. As mentioned above real beds and 3 hots every day. Seems like we had 6 hours of duty each day.
The best part was seing round eyed Drs. and RN's daily! |
