It is sad, but I don't even remember how we got from Devens to the Darby. I remember being on the ship setting at the dock. Do remember the trip, was sea sick most of the time.
kidney cancer   (reply)

Jim, I am doing pretty good. My only kidney now is in Stage 4 failure. They had to remove my good kidney, that was the one with the tumor. They put me on 2000 MG of sodium a day and 57 Grams of protien. My numbers haven't changed much in 5 1/2 years, which is good. 5 blood pressure meds. a day to keep my pressure around 120 over 70. That is the biggest problem with a bad kidney, high blood pressure. It is tough to do, but better than dialysis. I see my kidney doctor every 6 months with blood work.
Hope this helps Jim. If need anymore information let me know.

Thanks Frenchie. I work in the coal industry for around 30 years, but was required to wear ear muffs when we were around equipment. If they caught you without them, that was a firing situation, so you did what you were told. I was salary and couldn't take the chance. I do have a lawyer fighting my case, which should help.

The VA hospital sent me a letter and told me that I need to make an appt. with my VA doctor (The letter included my doctor's name). I made the appt. with my doctor of 6 years. They said nothing about the  out patient clinic till I went to get my travel pay.
I guess next year I will have to make the appt. with a CBOC doctor. Another new doctor to deal with.

Here is one I didn't know. I receive 50% disibility. I went to the VA hospital ( 74 miles from my home) for my yearly visit with my doctor. When I went to get my travel pay they told me that there was a VA clinic in my hometown and that my travel pay was based on that distance (10 mile). Told them my doctor was at the VA hospital and was basically told that wasn't their problem.

Greg, The examiner at the VA put in his report that I was at 3 - 5 mets, but the VA says that wasn't due to a heart problem but to my lung injury. I have schrapnel in my left lung in which I receive 20%, so I guess I am stuck at 10% unless I have a major heart attack in which I hope I never have.

I filed for renal cancer and renal failure, but was told it wasn't on the AO list.

Doc, I get 10%, because they can't do a cath on me. I only have one kidney and it is in stage 3 failure and they are afraid  the iodine will cause it to completey fail. I had a heart attack sometime between 2007 and 2010 according to two different stress test.. The VA says that they can't determine how bad mine is without the cath or surgury so I ended up with 10%.
Carlfryman, They done the silly math on me to. I am rated 60%, but only get 50%.

If I remember correctly, when my leave was over in July the airlines were on strike or something. I had to take a train back to Ft Devens from WV. It took 24 hrs. Remember picking up other brothers on the way. By the time we got to Mass. it looked like a troop train.

Jim, I think you are right. I remember telling my dad when we were on leave in July of 66 that we were suppose to go Vietnam and I didn't even know where it was.

Joe, apperently there was a lot of misleading info back then. I always wonder when Dennis Shaffer was wounded. Lost contact with him after I was transfered to HHC. We were good friends.  2/1 must of been on another operation also at this time period. I was in the field up to Feb. 3, don't remember what operation we were on. Sal C. one of the KIA's on the 4th replaced me on the 3rd.

Jim, I can't remember what operation we were on, but on 2/4/67 we had 3 KIA's  from the C Co. 2/1 and 1 from HHC 2/1 and  I think 1 from 3/21. None is mention in the sight that Greg posted. It says 5 KHA's on 2/6/67. Maybe there were to seperate operation going on. I might be misreading the report.

Don, after I got my C&Ps all done, it took about 5 months to get my new rating. Good luck. I am still waiting on answer from my appeal. I hired a law firm, they filed my appeal in Feb 2012.

I must of done something wrong. I took the hearing test at the Va, got my hearing aids. Filed for tinnitus and was turned down. Was told that my tinnitus was from working in the mining industry for 30 years. Filed a appeal, but haven't heard anything yet.

Does anyone know or have ever heard that a Vet with 100% disability is told how they can spend their money and account for what they spend it on? This came up in a discussion the other day.

Bill got my award for PTSD, but was not awarded for tinnitus. I worked in a coal mine and they said that was the cause of it. I filed an appeal. It is an uphill battle all the time with the VA.

Got that fuzzy math disability rating today. I was rated at 30%, just got 30% for PTSD and that adds up to 50%. Who knew all those math classes i took, they taught addition wrong. Is it a fact that at 50% you can get your meds for nothing thru the VA? That would help a whole lot.

Got my reward today for ischemic heart desease 10%. They said this wasn't their final decision. They would make it at a later date. Does everyone's letter state this?
