If I remember correctly, when my leave was over in July the airlines were on strike or something. I had to take a train back to Ft Devens from WV. It took 24 hrs. Remember picking up other brothers on the way. By the time we got to Mass. it looked like a troop train. |

Greg, thanks for the info on the book. I'm looking forward to reading it. Also, I have really enjoyed reading all your comments and recollections regarding this. I hope to hear more! |

That's a lot of hopping back and forth across the country, Jim. That must have been quite an adventure in a sports car back then, especially if it was a British or Italian car. My guess, though, is that it was either an American or German sports car. |

WOW! an AC Bristol, you stud you :-) Say you still got it? was it pre-Carroll Shelby? And here I thought I was cool with my Corvair Manza. Upon returning I traded it in for an Austin Healy sprite and made the same trip you did, heading to San Fran to join Timothy Leary and the revolution, the sexual one that is! only I started in the dead of winter :-( froze up in a blizzard between Omaha and Lincoln, towed in to Lincoln, when thawed out it needed a jump start, the mechanics had never seen a British car and didn't realize it had a positive ground. They burnt it to the ground. Never made the CA scene either and they gave me a fricking VW Bug to boot...... |

Larry, You are right about the airline strike! I flew home on leave on American Airlines and did not book a return flight. All the airlines went on strike except American. No way to get a booking on only 3 or 4 days notice. Several of us took a train from Chicago to Boston, 23 1/2 hours. They kept the Club Car open long after regular hours to accomodate our "thirst." |

If I had had to take the train back from LA, I think I would have gone AWOL until the Darby came around to pick me up.
I had the AC (pre-Cobra with a Bristol engine) for about 32 years until it was destroyed when my garage burned down. It was a great car. It had a few mechanical problems on the trip to-and-fro, but I got wonderful help from shops along the way. |

Jim, funny you mention that. I missed the boats in Panama, went to San Diego, missed the boats there, either early or late, don't remember was drunk. Flew to Saigon, then Cu Chi and met up with you at Tey Ninh when you flew in. I think I was sober by then :-)

this what you thinking about Steve? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England_States the New England stopped in 1967, and then the Lake Shore Limited started.
I was first in ROTC while in college and the Rail Roads always had the best military deals if you wore your uniform. I think even better than the Buses, and a lot more comfortable. But one thing I loved about being stationed in the south, and midwest was hitch-hiking in uniform. I could leave Ft. Gordon, GA or Ft.Myer, VA; and get to just about anywhere in less time. they loved us solja boys back then, well at least the white ones, this was still a segregated and sad time. And we hadn't killed any babies yet. Hiching around Ft. Dix was not so easy, and a lot of time we would spend big bucks for a cab to Philly or NYC, or just to a bus station.

Jim, I've been away from my PC for about a week. An AC Bristol! I would have never guessed that! A great car. Sorry that it was destroyed. That's the kind of car you keep forever. At least you had 32 years of great times with it, I'm sure, to provide you with fond memories. I was in the same boat as Greg, but on a lower level. The last car I had before going to Vietnam was a 63 Corvair, but not a Monza, like Greg had. It was, however, a fun car and I did like it. My parents sold it while I was in VN. |

Fun was not the word for mine, it was bigger than fun. We extended the exhausts and brought them straight up like a diesel truck stack. Took out the back seat and built a bed. Put balloon tires on it. Fixed the front trunk into a cooler with dry ice and a keg with a gravity tap to the inside under the dash. During low tide we could just about cruise the whole Jersey/Delaware coast. and a lot of Virginia, NC and SC to boot. Lived in that little dune buggy during the summer. didn't take long to rust out though :-) |
