1. VA file NO. include prefix.

If you had previously filed any VA claim, this number would appear on any correspondence and be your VA case number from now on. If you never previously filed a VA claim, you would not have this number. I'm not sure how this number would be assigned, as this medal request is not actually a VA claim. Talk to someone from the local (State) VA and have them explain what to put in this spot on your request. If you don't put something in, the request might be delayed for not complying with the instructions.

I've sent a email to SO at the local VA asking for assistance in filing out VA 2238.

Two weeks ago when I asked them for help attaining records the b-tch blew me off.

My DD-214 was not correct when I got out of the Army.  To make a long story short, I was told to file out a DD Form 149, Application for Correction to Military Records.  It took about a year, but my records were corrected and updated.  They notified me of citations and awards that I didn't know I was due.  This was all in 2003.  I did everything on line and through the mail.  It takes a long time, but in my case, the results was all I could have asked for and more.   Good Luck!

Hey all,

Just a report on the progress. I emailed a Service Officer whom responded much faster than I ever expected.

He says, "First, as far as I can tell, you have done exactly what I have advised veterans in a similar situation to do". He agrees everyones advice thus far has been RIGHT ON!

When I assist veterans with filling out a request for their C file, I usually have them complete a VA 21 – 4138 which I am attaching to this email. This is a simpler form to complete and it will accomplish the same goal.

The statement on the form I usually suggest is something like this.

I would like to request a copy of my records from the VA in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act. Please send them to the following address:

Thank you for your assistance.

C file requests, if the VA even has a C file, take approximately 2 months and if they cannot find the file they will notify you by mail.

I hope this helps you out and if you need anything else or have any further questions, feel free to contact me by email or by phone.

Thank you  for your service and good luck with adding your CIB.

He told me to leave the VA File # blank and I mailed the signed form to him at the Veterans Affairs office here in Louisville, KY.

A friend of mine is looking for some information about her Father who was in WW2. Does anyone know how she can go about getting any information. She knows that he was awarded the Bronze Star and has his serial number. He was in the 5th Division.

Being a federal employee for many years (now retired) i can recommend that you go to your local federal representative (congressman or senator).
The process may not be fast but you will get an answer.

Today I received a packet from the National Personnel Records Center in St Louis. There were about 40 pages in it and none that pertained to anything to support my evidence for obtaing the CIB that I rightfully earned. All I have to go on are two notarized buddy letters that I obtained from a 1st Lt. platoon leader I had for 6 months and a Capt. company commander I had for 4 months.

I believe I'm going to go to a local congressional office to get them to submit this info to the Army Board of Corrections for me.

Does anyone any more suggestions before I do this?

Thanks,
Roger Burge

Another thing to consider
are you in contact with anyone who joined your grunt unit at the same time you did?
I have my copy of my CIB orders and there are about 20 other guys on those orders too. A number of other guys that joined my company within about the same month are on my CIB orders.

I've only been in contact with one person from my unit other than the Lt and Capt. This fellow grunt had the same dates as I in Vietnam and naturally he's in the same predicament I am, his CIB is not on his DD 214 either. Matter of fact when he mentioned it to me is when I looked at my DD 214 and realized after all those years mine was omitted also. The CO mentioned in his letter that it had to have been a clerical oversight as I met all the qualifications to have received the medal.

The personnel file they sent me didn't contain copies of any orders what so ever during my time in the Army.

I've tried locating other members of my platoon but nothing comes up in the search for them.

Roger, to see what Jack is talking about go to http://jimcomer.smugmug.com/Vietnam
On the "Looking For" category.  Jim Comer posted a bunch of neat pictures.  at the end is his CIB orders along with all the other names of those getting it at the same time.  this might give you some clues of what to ask for under the FOI act.

Greg,
Sorry but I don't see a "Looking For" tab or category. All I see are pictures from his tour and Bill Doyles photo's.

Thursday night I did locate a fellow grunt from St Louis with exact dates in RVN and in my unit. He was mentioned in a Stars and Stripes article about a firefight we were in and got him a SKS keepsake to bring home out of the skirmish. He's going to look through his records for CIB orders and even his DD 214 to make sure he wasn't overlooked for the CIB.

Google "Professionals Net Five" Spinali was his name. Rider was the platoon leader.
