Jim, you are being pre-mature with the date.  but odds are you will be right :-(

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 29, 2012, as Vietnam Veterans Day.  I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that commemorate the 50 year anniversary of the Vietnam War.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-ninth day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth.

Hey guys go to http://175thengineers.homestead.com/HomePage.html  this may help your memory.  I was not on the boats and I thank my lucky stars, I think.  I was supposed to hook up with you guys in Panama, missed it, darn!  then again in San Diego, missed it, darn!  so I ended up flying over with one of the advance parties and spent the time building TayNinh.  I think that was easier than 30 days at sea  :-)

Frenchie, $45 sounds about right, maybe $47.  I actually had the receipt for it when I got out.  IIRC it was over half of my paycheck.  which I didn't get anyway, sent it back home except for about $10.  did not get another side arm, and got rid of the m-79 and got that rifle from the Mattel Toy Company.
Exactly Jim, plus I didn't realize you could send packages home from anywhere, much less the boonies.  R&R was a different story.  I guess the MASH story of the Depot Sgt. sending a whole jeep home piece by piece was true :-)

Good one Frenchie, here is my sad tale.  I too carried the M-79 and the .45 pistol.  While out in the boonies the holster latch came loose and while running and jumping into a chooper I lost the pistol.  I reported it right away but was told by the higher ups that I would have to pay for the pistol because I obviously sent it home, from the boonies :-)  IIRC it was like half of my paycheck that month....

Frenchie, your concerns of space are well taken but the majority  of family are all buried in the same space or niche if a mausoleum.

I had about a year left upon return to country and qualified to be with the Third Herd at Ft Myer. We would spend all day and nite if necessary putting a flag out on every grave in Arlington. Then go back tuesday and pick them all up.

LOL, you guys must have never walked the point or the flank or went out in squad size recon.  you saw everything when you were hyper alert :-)  of course you didn't see much in triple canopy but the monkeys and birds were there.  we usually followed animal trails and I think most were made by the wild boars that were popular.  I also remember a little deer or pronghorn I called rikki tikki, they would run through the saw grass but also jump straight up in order to see and get their bearings.  never saw the big cats, but heard them.  seems to me we would get worried if we didn't hear the bugs, frogs and birds, usually meant something was coming or already there.  If you saw rats, then no snakes.  If you saw snakes, then no rats.  The thing t...

He is a strange case Jim.  His full dress uniform makes him look like a doorman at the Ritz.  I remember seeing Eisenhower in full dress wearing only one bar with 4 or 5 ribbons.  Petraeus wears like 10 bars topped off by the Combat Action badge not the CIB.  he does have an EIB and Ranger TAb, was also infantry as a junior officer.  must not have seen any action until he was a two star.  CAB seems to have been invented in 2001 for Generals and others who met the same qualification as the CIB but were not 11 Bravos.  I think he got his CAB for the same mortar strike as his Bronze Star.  Also Frenchie, he has the ACM with two oak leaves.

here is a good follow up: https://mmj.vcu.edu/2010/12/06/non-hostile-deaths-common-in-iraq-afghanistan/  note that friendly fire represents only about 4% while suicide climbs to 21%.  The suicide rate continues into civilian life.  this is the real problem.....
Sleep Apnea   (reply)

Frenchie, my guess is that those with PTSD are in another catch-22.   PTSD is a  primary disabilty.  Sleep disorders are a side affect with PTSD, this is common knowledge.  So the VA will probably determine that veterans are already being compensated for apnea with PTSD as their primary.  Now if the Apnea is comorbid with the PTSD, meaning it is a disability seperate from and inspite of the PTSD, then you have two disabilities.  Now the problem becomes that the sleep apnea was not service connected and you won't be able to trace it back to the service, so no claim exists.  But a word of warning here, the biggest problem with PTSD and Sleep apnea is that those that have both do not use their CPAP machine. &...

. Veterans Affairs Reports Lowest Backlogged Disability Claims Since 2007

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently reported the lowest number of backlogged disability claims since record keeping began in 2007. The VA defines a claim as backlogged after it has awaited a decision for more than 125 days. The backlog is currently at 98,000 veterans which is an 84% drop from the backlog peak in March 2013.

Since 2012 the VA administration has been working to reduce the backlogged claims. The administration has been hiring new employees, as well as enforcing mandatory overtime for current staff. The VA has also made a considerable push to digitize records instead of relying on paper files. This is great news for veterans wit...

Hey guys, someone put these out on the tables of our Vet Center.  Our Vets are mostly Iraq/afhgan so probably under the age of 40.  For some reason when I read it I get a strange feeling.  Not sure if I like it or not.  Course I'm not one for this wounded warrior stuff either.   but read it and see what it does for you......

Infantryman’s Arrogance

Infantrymen have a pride and arrogance that most Americans don’t understand and don’t like. Even soldiers who aren’t infantrymen don’t understand. The pride doesn’t exist because we have a job that’s physically impressive. It certainly doesn’t exist because it takes a higher level of intelligence to perform our duties. It’s sad and I ha...

Hi Frenchie, same thing happened at Omaha.  Once we were sworn in they had us count off in threes.  Then said now all the threes step forward, you are now marines and they led them away.  Bad thing was that three of us signed up on the buddy plan, so much for that plan.  But all three of us returned.......

Jim, see below.  I think you are caught in a catch-22.  You are trying to get an appointment to determine if your condition is covered by the VA. As you are finding out this takes forever.  Care Cards are only for those who already have a VA approved need, but can't get a VA appointment in a timely manner, thirty days.  If you used your Care Card at a local dermatologist they will submit the bill to the VA, who will deny it because they didn't approve it.  And then the local clinic will send the bill to you.  Clear as mud????

"Care in the community is only covered by VA for medical needs which have been approved by your VA physician. We can happily schedule an appointment for other medical needs, bu...

Jim, depends on what you mean by much of the work being done? remember the engineers were with you on the boat.  about all we did before you guys got there was to  put up some wire and clear fields of fire and level the terrain.  The airstrip was already there and we lived in fox holes and crude bunkers around the perimeter and pulled ambush duty at nite and ducked mortar barrages. As the different companies showed up they were sent to various compass points around the strip so your HQ might have gotten lucky an caught an area that was more built up than the others left over from the 25th or the Arvans.  I know B company didn't catch a break. IIRC we were in fox holes with puncho covers for almost 6 months.  even af...

Jesus, me too!  I remember watching Radar on the MASH TV show, and he always knew there was a chopper coming in.  My wife said I was the same way :-)  I also remember being out on an ambush and heard a sound like a tank coming through our site.  turned out it was either a termiTe march or army ants.  Just a river of them 6 ft across and a foot deep and ran forever.  Another memory was first moving to Tay Ninh and blowing up the termite mounds to build our base, we found out they were full of cobras and it would rain live and dead ones......

the whoop-whoop-whoop of the helicopter blade cutting the air drives me crazy.  Unfortunately I live between two hospitals with choppers and a national guard/reserve force, and they are all hueys.  once I hear one I spend the rest of the day inside....

thanks for posting Jim.  I didn't understand the last paragraph.  We could join the Legion and the VFW, and the DAV?  It was Korea that couldn't for a while.  Me and my friends just chose not to because of the snide remarks of the WWII vets about us being losers and baby killers.  Besides they were the same age as our Parents, so we didn't have a lot in common.

Bob, have you seen this before?

“The Flag does not fly because of the winds that blow it,

The Flag flies because of each Soldier’s last breath blowing past.”

“For those who have fought and died for it,

freedom has a taste that the protected will never know.”

“The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him,

but because he loves what is behind him.”

Gordon, a Veteran is a Veteran!  Your job was just as important as mine in the bush.  So God Bless and use your can proudly, especially on Monday :-)  Besides some states have organizations that are handing out them to "any" Veteran.  While others have specific ones for those wounded since 9/11.  So there are a bunch of canes out there but they are all being used by Veterans.....

thanks Jim, I really like the opening narrative and the title, "the things we carried".  Frenchie had a similar thread that was very informative.  I think one of the posters to this film clip said it all.......

"Every soldier's experience was colored by their background and how they related to their fellow grunts. The same experience at the same time and place by thirty men, produces thirty different perceptions. As John Steinbeck said, "The story of Vietnam will be written by every soldier who takes up the pen, and write about what he saw and experienced. If you were there, WRITE, and keep on writing." I avoided these films for around 25 years.  then started watching them when they came on late tv.   the first one being "Gardens of Stone", I am partial to this film because I was with the Honour Guard upon my return and could relate to the whole film.  There wasn't a lot of combat vets with the Third Herd at that time.  I like R. Lee Ermey, an old marine sgt, and anything he is in.  I really liked the "Deer Hunter", not because it was about vietnam, but because it was just one hell of a movie.  And "Full Metal Jacket" for the same reason and mostly for the music :-)
