at the reunion i learned that sleep apnea is a secondary disability to PTSD.....are you getting compensated for sleep apnea?
EDIT: i looked around the internet and it looks like if you have PTSD you should be able to get a disability for Sleep Apnea....now the question is how many per cent will they award? i have seen 40% which seems excessive but i put in for it last week and when i get something back ill post it...good or bad. |

Heard about the sleep apnea last year and looked into it. VFW service officer told me that you had to be rated with ptsd, which I have (50%), so filed claim, suppose to be finalized this January. |

Frenchie, my guess is that those with PTSD are in another catch-22. PTSD is a primary disabilty. Sleep disorders are a side affect with PTSD, this is common knowledge. So the VA will probably determine that veterans are already being compensated for apnea with PTSD as their primary. Now if the Apnea is comorbid with the PTSD, meaning it is a disability seperate from and inspite of the PTSD, then you have two disabilities. Now the problem becomes that the sleep apnea was not service connected and you won't be able to trace it back to the service, so no claim exists. But a word of warning here, the biggest problem with PTSD and Sleep apnea is that those that have both do not use their CPAP machine. Over 50% of those on a cpap quit during the first year and the percentage of PTSD is even higher. But for those veterans getting out now that had sleep apnea diagnosed in the service and were using a cpap, then they qualify for 50% right off the bat, even more if they had surgery for it. AND if they also have a PTSD diagnosis then they also qualify for that rating. These two articles seem informative. http://www.usatoday.com/story/nation/2014/05/30/veterans-sleep-apnea/9780521/ http://www.npr.org/sections/he.....insurers-arent-happy |
