one that you can tolerate enough to watch the whole thing?
I liked watching GO THELL THE SPARTANS with Burt Lancaster (early years of the war)
Lately on my UVerse they been playing RESCUE DAWN on a regular rotation.....it is somewhat controversial and its supposed to be a true story....after wacthing that thing i felt like my year over there was a vacaction.....brutal to watch
The one most guy hates (Platoon) represented my year there in 120 minutes...everything that ever happened over there was shown in 120 minutes....the good the bad and the ugly
Post your flick to watch |

Frenchie:
I have found almost all of the mainstream Hollywood Vietnam movies seriously flawed.
One exception is "Good Morning, Vietnam," a surprisingly accurate, exciting, and moving film that has true-to-life Vietnamese characters.
Hard to find are the early documentary "The Anderson Platoon" (1966) and pseudo-documetary "84 Charlie Mopic." (1989) It is worth the effort to check your library or rental places for these. |

ive heard of The Anderson Platoon.....never seen it......I think ive seen Good Morning Vietnam..nothing in that movie stood out for me other than the music and Robin WIlliam;s character....The Green Berets (John Wayne was simplistic) ....theere is another one i seen "The SIege of Firebase Gloria" was pretty good/realistic.... I couldnt stand the Chuck Norris flicks about the MIAs |

I have enjoyed "Forrest Gump" a few times. The Vietnam scenes are good, but it doesn't seem to really be a Vietnam movie. "BAT 21" was good, too. "Coming Home" is one of my favorites, but for some reason didn't come to mind when thinking about Frenchie's question. Jim's list has some movies I would like to see. I did watch the "Tour of Duty" TV series regularly. Is that the same as the one listed on "ranker?"
Having never, ever heard the term "LT", a movie that uses it has some work to do. |

I couldnt stand Forrest Gump....not even close to being reflective of a vietnam vet....i describe it as a movie about a guy being mentally challenged going thru life...Never heard of a movie called Tour of Duty...the series was the only show i know that featured the Americal Division...Bat21 was very good....

Hey guys! All i did was search "movies about Vietnam War" and several lists came up. This seemed to be the best one so i linked it. I have seen several of them. To me none really showed our day to day life over there. As you know battle scenes are always over done. You fire 500 shots and no one gets hit or someone is hit 50 times and they are still going. Never have to reload ETC. |

Jim, thanks for the list. I would have never guessed there were 76. Never heard of about 70 of them. Based on the few I've seen, you are right, they are not very realistic. I guess you had to actually have been there to know what it was really like. |

I looked over the list and there is NO mention of "Rambo First Blood" ...i tried to find that Rambo rant in the movie (near the end) and was not successful but here is the quote........that quote spells it out for me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trautman: You did everything to make this private war happen. You've done enough damage. This mission is over, Rambo. Do you understand me? This mission is over! Look at them out there! Look at them! If you won't end this now, they will kill you. Is that what you want? It's over Johnny. It's over!
Rambo: Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war! You asked me, I didn't ask you! And I did what I had to do to win! But somebody wouldn't let us win! And I come back to the world and I see all those maggots at the airport, protesting me, spitting. Calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me? Who are they? Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!
Trautman: It was a bad time for everyone, Rambo. It's all in the past now. Rambo: For *you*! For me civilian life is nothing! In the field we had a code of honor, you watch my back, I watch yours. Back here there's nothing!
Trautman: You're the last of an elite group, don't end it like this.
Rambo: Back there I could fly a gunship, I could drive a tank, I was in charge of million dollar equipment, back here I can't even hold a job *parking cars*! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The movie clip is far more potent and powerful when heard. |

I avoided these films for around 25 years. then started watching them when they came on late tv. the first one being "Gardens of Stone", I am partial to this film because I was with the Honour Guard upon my return and could relate to the whole film. There wasn't a lot of combat vets with the Third Herd at that time. I like R. Lee Ermey, an old marine sgt, and anything he is in. I really liked the "Deer Hunter", not because it was about vietnam, but because it was just one hell of a movie. And "Full Metal Jacket" for the same reason and mostly for the music :-) |

thanks Jim, I really like the opening narrative and the title, "the things we carried". Frenchie had a similar thread that was very informative. I think one of the posters to this film clip said it all.......
"Every soldier's experience was colored by their background and how they related to their fellow grunts. The same experience at the same time and place by thirty men, produces thirty different perceptions. As John Steinbeck said, "The story of Vietnam will be written by every soldier who takes up the pen, and write about what he saw and experienced. If you were there, WRITE, and keep on writing."
