thanks for posting Jim. I didn't understand the last paragraph. We could join the Legion and the VFW, and the DAV? It was Korea that couldn't for a while. Me and my friends just chose not to because of the snide remarks of the WWII vets about us being losers and baby killers. Besides they were the same age as our Parents, so we didn't have a lot in common. |

Sorry, just being flippant. The web page and their online magazine does not require membership in the VVA or a subscription.
I agree with you about the older veteran's organizations. They seem to pride themselves with being aloof, stodgy and unwelcoming. The American Legion was enlisted by my county veterans office to be my "representative" in making a disability claim. They must have done a good job, but I never heard from them except to ask for a donation at the end of the process.
I could be mistaken, but I think the VA has the outrageous rule that the veteran himself or herself can not attend any hearings. I would like to hear from others about this rule. |

I had the same experience. I went into the local American Legion post for a couple beers. As soon as they heard I was a Nam vet, everyone steered clear of me. Only a few snide comments to let me know what a low life and disgrace to the military I was. I left. This was around '69. I didn't go back into one of those places until about 2007 when I went into a VFW with some relatives for pizza night. |

I joined, just stayed away from the goofs. out here in the mid-west the Legion was the social center of the community. they had the best bands and food and prices. AND being private they were the only place open on Sunday :-) |
