Brother Jim,
I agree with you 100% on the inaccurate description of "Attleborro" in S.L.A. Marshall's book  "Ambush". We, who were actually there, know the real story.
All of his analogies of what went on were way out of context with what really happened. His information network must have been very limited or was ignored.

Wow!!! talk about green banana's and pineapples, we used to peel the green banana's and fry them in grease, in our steel pots. same with the pineapples. Our ARVN interpeter taught us that trick and they tasted great.

I have a huge Infantry Decal (with A CIB) on my driver side window that gets a lot of attention. But the 196th & ADVA decals  on the corners of my windshield never get any attention at all. Also have them in rear window.

Oh Boy!!!  The first day in Tay Ninh base camp. We were blowing up thoe huge ant hills with C-4 and about the 3rd one we blew, here comes 2 Cobras flying through the air, one lands about 10 feet in front of Sgt. Nutter, he opened up with his M-16 full auto and shot that poor snake to pieces. Of course it was already dead when it hit the ground. We all had a big laugh.

Bob,
I was fortunate enough to get 2 R & R's on top of the 7 day leave. Went to taipei for Christmas week "66". Had a great time there. Went Tokyo on my 2nd R&R
and was miserable the whole week. All the Hookers there, just wanted your American Dollar. Amazing I didn't end up in a Japanese jail. Broke a few bottles and glasses in a few bars. My 7 day leave to Taipei in early June of "67" was one of the Highlights of my time in the Army. There was a photographer following me and my Lady escort every where we went while in the Mountains. I didn't know about it until I was ready to head back to taipei. The Lady i was with had pre-arranged to have him follow us. Cost me $30 for the Pics. but...

Bob,
The same thing happened to me and a buddy. We put in a 10-49 for a 7 day leave to Taipei. It took us 16 days there and back. What a trip that was. Really enjoyed it though. We spent 5 days in the Aboriginne Mountains with a couple of hookers (Who were Aboriginnes, the Chinese version of Indians) The CO just shook his head and told us to hit the chopper pad for back in the field.

Greg,
I know what ya mean. I ad 2 R&R's and a 7 day leave thanks to my poker winnings. I remember one night we had a real good game going, I was about 3 grand ahead, and we got mortared about half way through the games. Some one started yelling "incoming" and cash and poker chips went flying all over the place as we all headed for the bunkers. All I could do was laugh it off. Damn!!! I must have lost all I had in the confusion.

Quoted from Ken McKenzie, C, 4-31, posted February 21st, 2011, 5:31pm at here

I remember Volpe, and McLeod was in my platoon during basic but moved to another platoon later. Seems like we had a lot of guys from the metro areas of Detroit, Chicago, and NY in the original 196th. Most of us were drafted at Ft Dix or Ft Knox.

Ken,
Remember when Volpe got caught in the "Escape & Evasion" exercise. The Governor of Mass. was named Volpe. He told his captors he was Gov. Volpe's son. Almost got court martialed for it. Laughed my butt off.

Ken,
I had many friends in C-4-31, let me run some names by you. Thompson, Zarringer, Volpe, McLeod, "Villotch" (nickname) and a few more I can't remember. Thompson and I grew up together in Detroit. Thats why I spent a lot of time in your area. Do you remember the big poker games you guys had at the Tay Ninh base camp? I cleaned up a couple of times. lol.

Ken,
     I. too, was sent to the 25th in Jan. 67. What unit were you assigned to? I ended up with B-1-27 wolfhounds. Had a real good buddy named Ken Schafer sent to C-1-27, he was an original from C-4-31. Did you know him? Super nice guy from Detroit.

Larry,
I remember that storm we ran into. It is amazing no one was washed overboard. The whole front of the ship was under water more than once, it would rise way up, then way down. The Darby must have missed that storm. I was one of the lucky ones. I got a 36 hour pass to leave the LB Naval Base with a girl friend who lived in LA. She had to sign some paper work saying she would be responsible for me being back on time.

Greg,
No problem. Welcome home brother. I know how you felt, being sent to a unit that had been together for a while. I had the same experience in late jan. 67, I was transfered to the 25th Div. in Cu Chi, assigned to B/1/27 "Wolfhounds". Never did get to know those guys like in the 196th. I was more like a cast-off, but after a while i got to be good friends with the guys in my squad. Wow!! some of those guys were nuts!!!

Greg,
Don't know where you got your info about a tour in "65". I stated I was with C/3/21 65-66-67.  Basic, AIT and other training at Devens & Camp Drum (Red-con Ready) Left devens on July 15th, 1966 via U.S.S. General Patch. Went through the Panama Canal, docked at Long Beach Naval Base for 3 days, left there and about 15 days later we landed at Vung Tau. Hope that satisfies your curiosity! What! Did you think you found a "wannabe". lol. Question for you. Were you at Devens in Oct. 1965?

Jim,
I have no idea why they would have the wrong date Blevins and Myers was KIA. SSGT Frankel, Blevins and Myers were all 3 KIA on 11-4-66. As a matter of fact, Blevins was right next to SSGT Frankel when they were KIA. I am not sure if it was a 155 or 105 shortie. It was called in by the battalion Co. of th 1/27, 25th Div. Major Meloy. We were being assaulted by NVA & VC  (Human wave) numbering over 100 the first assault, and less than that the next 2 times. my company C/3/21 & A/1/27
were linked and caught the brunt of the attacks. SSGT Frankel called for a cease fire after the first attack and then when the 2nd one came they called the artillary in again and it was landing right on us. It would take me ...

Jim,
Thanks for the research. RTO James Blevins was also a good friend, went through Basic and AIT with him. Another good friend was also KIA the same day (Walter Myers) from Conn. John Bates was correct about the 155 short round.

As a supplement to my C-rats I carried a couple of tins of sardines in Mustard sauce. Guys used to get pissed at me when i would pop a can of those suckers at night during an Ambush. You could smell those sardines for miles. Seems like evrey time I would forget my sardines, we would hit some shit.
