Bob, I did go on 3 day R&R in country somewhere down south. Rmember passing out on the beach in shorts and no shirt in 100 degree heat for 3 hrs. Looked like a lobster when I woke up. Next 2 weeks were pure hell. |

Bob, I was fortunate enough to get 2 R & R's on top of the 7 day leave. Went to taipei for Christmas week "66". Had a great time there. Went Tokyo on my 2nd R&R and was miserable the whole week. All the Hookers there, just wanted your American Dollar. Amazing I didn't end up in a Japanese jail. Broke a few bottles and glasses in a few bars. My 7 day leave to Taipei in early June of "67" was one of the Highlights of my time in the Army. There was a photographer following me and my Lady escort every where we went while in the Mountains. I didn't know about it until I was ready to head back to taipei. The Lady i was with had pre-arranged to have him follow us. Cost me $30 for the Pics. but it was worth every cent. I get them out every now and then and look at them and reflect on the great time I had. |

When I was with the 196th I got to go to Taipei with a couple of guys from my platoon. When they split up the originals in January 1967, I got sent to the 25th Div. They lined us all up and asked who hadn't been on R&R. I figured if they had to ask, they didn't know, and we all raised our hands. I wanted to go back to Taipei, but we were in the field for 72 days and one night they asked if I wanted an R&R. I didn't care where it was, and said yes. It turned out to be Hawaii, even though I wasn't married. It was nice, but we met some girls from NJ in the Shell bar who were very friendly, until we told them we were on R&R from Vietnam. They suddenly remembered they had to go some place. |

Ken, Yep, thats how I got my 2nd R & R. When I was transfered to the 25th. They didn't know, so I took advantage.

Larry, I did the same thing on my in country R&R to Vung Tau. I remember drinking brandy & cokes all night long and spending all day on the beach recuperating. Then we did the same thing all over again for 3 days. And yes, it was very hot and I do remember the sunburn! |

Joe and Ken, Good for you guys! That was quick thinking on your part. If they had to ask who hadn't taken R&R, you know they had no idea. You gave the right answer. Ken, you were lucky getting Hawaii when you had no idea where it would be. Taipei & Hawaii, it couldn't get much better than that. Joe, I heard the the same thing about Tokyo, but at least you have some great memories from your time in Taipei. |

I had more than my share. Did Taipei, Hong Kong, Penang and some local 3 dayers! Like others said no one seemed to keep track of stuff or care. The first shirt would show up and say anyone wanna go to blank, no one would volunteer they were waiting for something better, then I would :-) Some also used the passes to gamble with so the winners would go again also. I think it was Vung Tau that I asked about R&R in a war zone and how safe it was? I was told that the Koreans had their camp there and that it was safer than being stateside. No one wanted to mess with them.

Greg, I'm glad to hear that you took advantage of your R&R's. We deserved as many as we could get away with. You are right about Vung Tau. I had a 3 day R&R there. The Koreans did have a camp there and the VC didn't want anything to do with them. Very safe. I ran across a couple Korean soliders and was very impressed with them. You definitely didn't want to get on the bad side of them. TRhey were some tough dudes. |
