Heads Up - A 3/21 Historical Documentary film maker, Ken Burns is producing a documentary on the Vietnam War In particular he is trying to talk with guys that were in A3/21 during the "field refusal" in Aug69 when Capt.Shirtz was the company CO. do we really want him to drag this bad memory through the mud? I was in A3/21 in 1971. But I'm not to keen on having our company's memory treated this way http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/bravo1bn20vietnam/24aug.html from the current 196th newsletter http://www.pbs.org/about/news/archive/2011/ken-burns-vietnam/ http://watching-tv.ew.com/2011/03/28/ken-burns-vietnam-pbs/ |

medics were 91B after i got medevaced home I got a job in the AG's ReplCo of the 2nd Armored they changed my MOS from 11B to 71H. I processed 201 files ;-) "Currently known as 68W, the Army's basic medical MOS was changed, effective October 1, 2006. Formerly known by the MOS codes 91B (91 Bravo) and 91A (91 Alpha), both MOS's were employed during and after the Vietnam War." |

if you haven't read it yet? David Walker's book, 'Cyclops in the Jungle' is an excellent read. The last LRP unit he was in in Nam was E3/21, 196th LIB in 1971 when LTC Negris was battalion CO at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Cyclops-.....yclops+in+the+jungle |

I am not sure what this means: "Whether you survived or not, God dialed that one desire." | Jim, I agree. not very good prose but what do you expect from a grunt |

Frenchie & Steve are correct. If you came home from the 196th before it was attached to the Americal you wear the 196thLIB patch because it was a stand alone brigade, not attached to a division. This was also true when Steve and I were in A 3/21 in 1971. When the Americal (11thLIB & 198thLIB) went home in the summer of 1971 the 196thLIB went back to being a stand alone brigade, not attached to division. So those of us who came home from the 196th in the fall of 71~1972 wear the 196thLIB combat patch. In reality, the guys that stayed to August 72 should be wearing a patch for the 3/21 "Gimlets" battalion since they got left behind when the 196thLIB went home ;-) |

John, you should go back into your profile and change your user name on this board to your first & last name. When people scan the board for friends they're looking at the names who posted note that I also have my platoon, company, battalion and year that I was in my unit so it appears under my username, also a photo of what I looked like when I was in-country. this is the only board on the internet where I actually use my real whole name as my user name. |

GREAT PICS thanks for posting I was in Alpha. I got medevaced back to the 95th hospital at China Beach the day before typhoon Hester hit. It flooded the quonset hut ward we were in so they evaced us, first to ClarkAFB in the Philippines, then I went to the Naval hospital on Guam. from there back to Brook at FtSam. http://i48.tinypic.com/244rtr7.jpg |

Another thing to consider are you in contact with anyone who joined your grunt unit at the same time you did? I have my copy of my CIB orders and there are about 20 other guys on those orders too. A number of other guys that joined my company within about the same month are on my CIB orders. |

my trip home was on a stretcher in a C-141 when I got medivaced they sent me to 95thEVAC at ChinaBeach then typhoon Hester hit ChuLai, but DaNang was on the wet side of the storm the hospital flooded so they evaced me first to ClarkAFB in the Philippines then to the naval hospital on Guam for 2 weeks then on the flight home- though Hawaii, then Travis AFB in Calif then finally to Brook General at Ft.Sam when I was released from the hospital I went to the bus station in downtown SanAntonio to catch a bus home there we two hippie chicks walking around the waiting room spitting on all of us and calling us Baby Killers. all of us were either Army or AirForce and all in uniform since we were all traveling on orders. we... it looks like the sign we had on LZ Center? but around Jul71 is when we moved to DaNang (Camp Reasoner) I'm guessing it's the sign in DaNang? btw - by Jul71 the 23rdID"Americal" had stood down and the 196thLIB was a stand along brigade again. The sign still has the Americal insignia on it which I think was removed when the sign got put back up in DaNang, which would make the sign the one on LZ Center? I really don't know and I was there ;-) |
