I learned to rinse the pork slices in clean water (hard to get), mix with apricot jelly and heat with C4. I was the demo man so I had plenty of C4. I also heated an endless supply of instant coffee. The coffee wasn't good but it was a source of vitamin C. The stuff was made by Coca Cola company which has enormous orange orchard holdings in Florida. They actually fortified instant coffee with Vitamin C! We could steam the canned bread. At one point we stole a can of GI margarine. If you slam a bayonet through the top of the bread can and put in margarine and canned jelly before steaming, it was pretty good.
When we traveled by Chinook we would pack the bore of our 106 Recoilless with C rats.
Upon arrival we elevate the muzzle and open the breech and out would slide our peaches, spaghetti & meatballs, etc.

thinking about eating c-rats and had to laugh-seemed like every FNG that finally got to have spagetti and meatballs heated it w/ c-4 or a heat tab and it pushed up out of the can until it flopped over on the ground. Then they had to fill up on crackers!haha and  they would always burn their fingers on the heat tab because in daylight you couldn't see the flame!

Never had C/4 , didn't fumes from heat tabs. Mixed lighter fluid with peanut butter or used small sticks. Small dent in the side of can. Watch for it to pop out. No spagetti and meatballs in the dirt. Careful when opening!!!!

Jim, I remember the rolled canned ham and also share your feelings about it.  Jack, I also remember and have used the cracker can cooker.

Jim, I was thinking about that rolled canned ham. I think what we had was called spiced ham, but it had the look and texture of rolled canned ham. Probably the same thing.  My feelings about canned ham to this day have not changed.  Don't invite me to dinner if that's what you are serving.

!972 3rd 21st ,, I was 18 and would eat anything , except the canned lima beans and scrambled egg mixture . Memerable though was real colorful fish , the size of small perch , wrapped in big leaves , slow cooked with stones by a Viet scout ,, was excellent ..

We had a Puerto Rican Sgt. on his third tour. This guy showed some in my squad alot of the natural fruit and veggies. Very good additions to C-Rats. He was a little strange. He would pin leeches with thorns to watch as they pulled themselves into. He would also bury them in pill bottles. To each his own . We all needed a little diversion.

We had guys that picked not ripe bananas and lugged them around until they were ready to be consumed.
