i came in During or right after Tet ... landed in Cam Rahn Bay...
im told by one that he came in country on a C141 from Seattle (i forget the air base there) and landed in Chu Lai? never heard of that before....
did this happen to anyone here? or is this a war story (aint NO b.s. variety) |

damned if I know Frenchie, but Seattle? More likely that could have happened if he flew out of McChord AFB just South of Tacoma which is 30 miles from Seattle. So, Seattle = BS. Tacoma McChord AFB = plausible. I left for and returned from Vietnam at McChord AFB but flew over on a DC-8 stretch and returned on a Boeing 707 and both were commercially outfitted aircraft.
Also, you might ask him if it was a commercially outfitted craft. They were wholly operated by the Air Force and there were no Flying Tiger versions though they did consider it. They had no comfy seats and such, as they weren't configured that way more like cargo and paratroopers. It is possible that he went over in jump seats with cargo but almost certainly from McChord and not Seattle though a lot of people think Seattle starts at Portland Oregon and extends to Canada. |

We processed through Ft Lewis. Flew to Alaska, 2 hour lay over off of the plane, then to Japan for about 6 hours sitting on the tarmac way away from anything.
On the way back i think we stopped in Midway for about 2 hours off of the plain.
Never heard of a flight to Chu Lai from the states.
Not positive but i think everyone came through Cam Rahn |

Jim Gray: what youre describing is my recollection (with your help)...I know we stopped in Alaska ..i think we debarked (?) in Alaska and i recall ripping out a page from the local phone book (souvenir) and then I THINK we stopped on Okinawa.
I brought up that C141/Chu Lai story because it seemed a bit unlikely but who knows...its been a long time. |

| There was a group of us that flew over from McChord AFB on the 6th of Feb directly to Chu Lai with stops in Hawaii, Wake Island and Clark AFB. We flew over on three C-141's that had the webbed seats which was a little rough for that length of flight. Our group, which was about battalion size, had been in Ft. Lewis about 28-30 days just doing some physical training everyday, but mostly just sitting around. In fact, we were told that we would be getting a leave before heading over to Vietnam, so everyone was making arrangements to fly home for a week or so when the order came down that the leaves were cancelled and to pack up because we were flying over as replacements because of Tet. With the layovers I believe we landed in Chu Lai on the 9th of Feb. We were trucked to the 196th's replacement center on Chu Lai beach and spent a few days there sleeping in tents and digging bunkers in the sand before we were shipped out to our units. I know a bunch of us went to the 3/21, but I'm sure we were scattered throughout the 196th. |

Tru story I also was on that flight on C 141 refueled in Alaska then gaum I think then straight into Chu Lai. we were all packing shelter half's and all sorts of crap we.d never use.
I remember they were patching up the runway from a mortar attach the night before.

I remember flying incountry in Oct 68 on a commercial flight from Ca. to Bien Hoa, with a short layover in Hawaii. My return home began in Da Nang where I was medevaced to Camp Oji Japan for a couple of months to recover from injuries. I was later flown back to the states from Japan via Alaska along with a lot of fellow patients and military equipment on a massive C5A. I just remember a very long flight, no stewardesses, box lunches, sitting backwards facing the tail of the plane on canvas benches and very little internal lighting. But I was going home!! Doc |
