When i joined my platoon in early March of 1968 I "inherited" the M79 Grenade Launcher.  Towards the end of March and most of April we were at Camp Evans.....they had our company right next to the runway where we started digging foxholes for defensive positions....it didnt take very long before we learned that right across the runway there were pallets of C rations and each night for about 3-4  days we would go across the runway  and help ourselves to snacks for the nigh.....we would eat the good stuff.....and go back the next night for more...
welllll, one day we had a meeting......they told us that there would not be any more raids across the runway.....the next day , sure enough they had barbwire around it and...

Gov Rick Perry has a piece on Foxnews in regards to the article questioning Chris Kyle (american sniper) number of medals/awards etc.
http://www.foxnews.com/opinion.....e.html?intcmp=hphz01

Im not sure he has set the record straight but i assure everyone that the records are not always right.  In my case my DD214 did not include some of my awards/medals , most were routine but two were not.  Fortunately i had my orders reflecting the ones not on my DD214.  I didnt do anything about it until i retired...then i went to the VA Hosp and spoke to a service rep there and showed him my paperwork....he submitted it..and weeks , weeks later i get a tiny box in my ma...

just found out they do about 30 funerals a day at Arlington......i was fortunate enought to be able to visit arlington back in 1999....bad day, chains saws buzzing everywhere, tour buses in and out all day long....i did see some famous headstones including someone i knew (Greg Boyington, MOH)
but what bothered me (just me i know) is that i saw headstones of non vets (spouses) and even children/babies of deceased vets buried there.  It wouldnt have bothered me as much if space was not an issue.....30 burials a day

Bronze? Id call that a serious upgrade...however i seem to recall something along those lines....if a
grunt got a meritorious medal at the end of his tour (attaboy medal) it would probably be an Army Commendation Medal....but if an officer got a attaboy medal it probably  would be a Bronze Star (no V).  I could be mistaken....love to hear from an officer .

How did you get that CIB?  im hoping to generate some interest, after all MOST if not all of us earned one.

For me, its almost embarrassing.....I was with Co C 4/31 and joined the company in March68.  We were on LZ Polar Bear waiting for my company to trot in.  They came in and met the guys.....we were there a day or so when all of a sudden we got sniped at from some rice paddy wayyyy out there...i certainly didnt feel like was in danger.  ONE bad guy taking pot shots at us...and thats how I earned mine......of course, we retruned fine at some inviisble target  probably 1/4 mile away with 105MM arty.....dont know if they got him but it did get quiet.  No one got hit as far as I know.

This is another one that we saw only once in the field....it was LZ Mellon...while on guard duty at night some of us started to notice something "flying" from one tree to another top of a tree a  short distance away...they were going as if in slow motion......couldnt really tell what it was....so the consensus was that they were "flying monkeys".

welllllllllllllllll, we were wrong.....it wasnt until a few years ago wheni was watching National Geographic documentary that i learned what they were.......the documentary was made in a SE Asian country (i forget which one) possibly Thailand or the PHilipines....and i learned that the were some type of squirrels with webbing between the legs and the body that gave them t...

recently they had an episode called  Finding Vietnam's Lost POWs.   Very interesting......catch it if you can....the claim is the POWs left unmistakable signs in the jungle and no one went to look for them or the signs were deemed not to be a call for help.  I assume we all heard stories of POWs being abandonned for political reasons but ive never seen a program saying this.'
ANyone seen this program?

i was trying to think as to where we were ....had to dig deeeep and my best guess is it was near Million Dollar Hill...and im guessing your explaination is probably applicable to our situation.....the life cycle of leaves(?) but whats weird is that it only happened that once spot and only once.

my next you wont believe this story will about what we called 'flying monkeys" on LZ Mellon (only)

strangely enough It only happened once....we were moving after darkness to our night spot.  Too dark and almost too close to the guy in front.....i dont know who it was, could have been me, we noticed leaves on the ground that were glowing in darkness much like a luminous watch.....so presto, we all grabbed one and put securely on our helmet cover holder........it worked very well.....
never saw that happen again....

Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo,
Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; I cover all.
And pile them high at Gettysburg
And pile them high at Ypres and Verdun.
Shovel them under and let me work.
Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?
Where are we now?
I am the grass. Let me work

Bob you should have seen all of my california friends rushing up there and braggging about having a drivers license.....in the end we all had a good laugh.

i dont know how it works but when we left fresno,ca to go to ft lewis they put this one guy in "charge" ...he "maintained" order among the soon to be soldiers.........all the way to seatac airport

yes, i m from Ca but basic training was not at Fort Ord....a bunch of us from my town were drafted at the same time and traveled together to SF and then to Ft Lewis...id say there were 20 of us.....we ended up in the same platoon.....mostly
so one day we are at the rifle range....i didnt do great but i passed (i think everyone passes no matter what) lol.....

so we are done with the shooting.....the Drill Sergeant barks something like: ANYONE FROM CALIFORRRRNIA WITH A DRIVERS LICENSE?  I HEAR EVERY)ONE IN CALIFORRRRRNIA DRIVES.

well, let me first say that i had made up my mind before basic that i would be invisible and not volunteer for anything......so a bunch of them California drivers raise the hands up....im sure they ...

Thanks Jim.....youre right and there is lots of good info also , aside from the pictures

However, i go these sites rarely...i find them sad and i question the whole war more and come back with no answers....just a waste of lives....so many that looked like all of us died for nothing
so much for that domino theory.

Something in the VFW Mag caught my eye...bothers me in this day and age of "smart bombs, GPS guided Missiles, surgical strikes"  etc etc etc. you know all the buzz words,  you decide.  I had to to the math when i read the numbers.

PERSIAN GULF  WAR DEATHS, 1190-1991
TOTAL HOSTILE DEATHS          148
TOTAL NON-HOSTILE Deaths    235
     Operation Desert Shield       84
      Operation Desert Storm     151

TOTAL DEATHS                      383

We all know about "Friendly Fire"  I tell people  i  was shot at by the bad guys and occasionally bombed by the good guys....so they all had a shot at Frenchie...
Sad situation.....More guys were KIA by our side than by the enem...

Heard about the sleep apnea last year and looked into it. VFW service officer told me that you had to be rated with ptsd, which I have (50%), so filed claim, suppose to be finalized this January.

thanks you Don
thats very encouraging.....im hopeful to get it finalized by January......hoping.
Ill post when i hear something......in fact i need to call the toll free number and check up on it.....i dont think i received an acknowlegment of them receiving my claim yet.
