Larry Fur's post in the Guestbook a few days ago made me realize that he and I were in the same platoon and may have even overlapped in mid-1967, although I don't remember his name or that of Donald Haile abput whom he was posting. There were about 50 or 60 platoons in the 196th. Each one had 30 or 40 members at any one time and a total that is very hard to compute over our deployment. I wonder if those who served in each of these basic units have a sense of comradeship with others and if there exists any sort of continuity.
This is not a firm idea, but maybe some discussion of a page within larger ones for companies and/or batallions might lead to meaningful dialogue.
As a one time member of C 2/1, I visit Charlie Grunts regularly, but find most of the men there are of a later period. There is no problem with that, but it may be a common thing to happen.
So, any ideas form anyone or from the great guys who kep this Forum up and running? |

True Jim; I'm still trying to figure out how to accomplish something like you mentioned.
The problem is that if I create a category for each battalion, then each company, then each platoon; then it might have to be replicated for each year. Because tours overlap, that would place most people in two years.
It's difficult to keep people posting in the correct category, even having only a few. If we had more categories it might make it more difficult for people to find conversations that pertain to themselves, or their buddies.
I'm really not sure what the correct thing to do is. I'm willing to take suggestions on the best way to create new categories. We got some good ideas, but I only want to do it once because it may be hard to undo if we get it wrong.

Jim and Ken, not sure how helpful that would be? For me at least. I am lucky that I can remember that I was in B company, 3/21 much less what platoon or squad :-) Nor would I know how to find out?
