In order to organize this forum so it is easy to navigate, we will have to create additional categories (Headings) under which specific discussions can take place. Some of the headings we are considering are; battalions, years, specific battles, firebases, etc.
Please submit your suggestions as a reply under this thread, or in a new thread under this heading.
If you would like to set up your own heading, which you will moderate, that is also possible. |

Ken: This could be a great addition to the website.
I think eventually we might get to some meaningful current affairs discusion, but for now I think categories both by units and time frames would be most useful.
I find only moderate interest in things from say 1972, when I had been home for five years, but I really perk up when Fort Devens folks speak out.
I'll give it some more thought and come back.

A current events category would be nice. I'm sure a lot of guys would like discuss current events. Also, I think year groups would be good. Things changed a lot from one year to the next and people had different perspectives. Maybe a category of operations, since there were not many named battles. Maybe an R&R category.
I'll see what else I can think of as things progress. |

I have a bunch of forums I participate in and a few I moderate. Mostly having to do with my hobby interests like my 64 Fairlane and the shared platform with 62/63 Mercury Meteors, Proflex mountain bikes, mini-machine shop and a mess of other things small block Ford related.
My experiences include Joke forums where the tone generally turns foul without some ground rules so I discourage even forming one.
The lounge forums tend to be pretty much anything goes but still require some ground rules since they can get very heatedly political and include a lot of cut-&-paste from BS email campaigns and otherwise turn a lot of people off that don't share the same level of passion for the debate.
Company level forums would be great. Talking to some of my buds from Bravo 4/31 drove home some details for me. I pretty much knew what was going on with my brother to the left and the right of me. Within my squad was pretty familiar. Within my platoon was the farther reaches of what I heard about. What was out of my immediate sight was another war entirely.
Firebase forums make sense. Pretty much follow the unit structure for commo and contact then and now. |

Thanks for the good ideas. Not having any experience running a Forum, I appreciate the comments.
In the Guestbook we do not allow any political discussion that knocks anyone. Whether we should allow unrestricted rantings is something that has to be decided. I agree, I don't want it to be a place for spreading unsubstantiated e-mail messages. I'll listen to some more suggestions, and then discuss it with the 196th officers before creating the categories.
So far the years seem to be a popular suggestion. How do you think they should be divided up. For example, most of us were in-country over a 12 month period containing two years.
You mention "ground rules." Would you have some examples or a set of rules you've found effective? If you have something, please e-mail it to me. |

Okay, I copied, edited and sent you a PM with an example of a Code of Conduct (CoC) via PM. It is pretty representative of what is boilerplate in forum land by my experience. It may have even been in the agreement we check boxed to sign in here. I, like others, tend to scroll down and check the box without reading it so it is a good idea to repost something as a reminder.
Also, were you going to initiate a CAPTCHA software trap to reduce spammers and email bots seeking to harvest our info? |

| I would suggest a discussion on what we found as an advance party. When the main body arrived a lot of the work was done, although we continued to improve the base camp site, but the initial touchdown in Saigon to the touchdown in Tay Ninh and the ensuing year. How many convoys did we make to resupply ammo to forward positions, how many airlifts of howitzers and A-22 bags of ammo did we do and what did we encounter? We were in a different war upon arrival vs what the remainder of the Brigade encountered over the next 6 years. I read the guestbook frequently and find most of the postings are like a foreign language..nothing seems familiar including FB's etc. I take my hat off to all who came after us. You did a remarkable job under less than satisfactory conditions. I hope the ground work we laid in OUR year was enough for you to build on and sustain each of you through your tour. Thanks for being a CHARGER and for your role in securing peace for us all. |

Ken, a year by year would be fine but I would prefer a each LZ would have its own section...in alphabetical order for all years....if that is not feasible then id say go for the unit by unit battalion breakdown list.

I remember blowing up the termite mounds with c-4 and bangalores, but you had to be careful of snakes, they shared space in the mounds and sometimes it would rain pieces of snakes and live snakes after an explosion.

| I went back to Vietnam in Nov 98 for 1 week & 3 weeks April 99 to Hanoi to help then set up lottery machines. Was always looking for american info, lighters, dog tags, ect. Never found anything. First week in 98 was scary. The three weeks i spent there in 99 was very interesting, but not scary. The people treated me great. All they wanted to do was learn english & get out of Viet Nam. |

A suggestion:
develop a boilerplate format for the signatures or some other part of the member profile so that anyone can use the "search" button to find specific people, LZ's, Units, Battles or whatever.

and etc. Lots of possibilites that I can't think of too. Might even include hobbies that old farts get involved with. I do metal fabrication and machining to include my old hot rod 64 Fairlane and falling off mountain bikes. Just a thought or two. |

"we" let them in. On the car site I moderate, I check it several times daily and the first place I go is the memberlist. I select descending order to display the most recent new members and then check their name, website, email address and any other info they post. The spammers almost always expose their motives in those postings. Their website will be a crap for sale site, names will be random keystrokes as will be the email addresses. Normally, they sign on as members and let it stew before loading the site with garbage.
That site has over 8000 members so it can be a handful but lately the membership and traffic has slowed to a crawl so it has gotten easy to monitor for one guy, me. Normally we had a group of six or eight guys and the site owner to keep people in line and ban spammers.

Sorry it got out of hand. That's what I get for going away for a week... I've deleted all the posts and banned the IP address. I'll also submit a complaint to the domain administrator.
I could require all new members to the forum to be validated before they can post, but that might discourage some of those that are less computer literate from joining. Let's see what happens in the future. |

Many sites devoted to Vietnam are mainly Infantry orientated.
What I would like to see happen here is a section for Artillery. Since being from C-3/82/196th (Ft. Devens original) and B-3/34/2/9th ID; I guess I could be a little biased.
It could be organized by unit, year, firebase, operation(s) or some other criteria that applies to artillery. |

Lz Hurricane is a 1/82 site that doesn't have a forum and they decided to include all 82nd arty as well.
I was 4/31 infantry for my first half then transferred to 1/82 arty to finish.
There could be some crossover with a links section at the least. |

Hi Ken,
Would like to suggest we set up a category for 196th Merchandise. Now that I'm the quartermaster, I would like to be able to "communicate to the masses". Things like: "We're out of black 196th T Shirts in size Large & 2X"; and "We're out of challenge coins". (Both of these statements are accurate, by the way) Or to let our members know when a particular item is back on inventory, etc.

| Doc, great idea, as is Jim's comment on including pictures. This way we could stay up to date on inventory, especially any new items. I'm planning on ordering a couple items and this would be a good way to do it. Ken, I hope you will be able to set something up. |
