I went to V. A. today for treatment and went to get my travl pay and was told that there was an $18.00 copay for the visit.  When did the copay go into effect.

Michael, Ken,
I took the liberty to re-post this from the stuck thread on the Forum, to a new post under VA claims thinking it would get more traffic and read by more.
so as to the question I assume you have a co-pay because you either have insurance like tricare, or do not meet  destitute formula :-)  see more at:

Here is one I didn't know. I receive 50% disibility. I went to the VA hospital ( 74 miles from my home) for my yearly visit with my doctor. When I went to get my travel pay they told me that there was a VA clinic in my hometown and that my travel pay was based on that distance (10 mile). Told them my doctor was at the VA hospital and was basically told that wasn't their problem.

That's BS. The VA has patient advocates; go talk to one. If this is true we need to raise a stink.
I have a CBOC (Community Based Outpatient Clinic) close to my house, but the dermotologist doesn't come here, I have to drive 89 miles to the VA hospital, and I'll be damned if they told me I wasn't going to get travel reimbursment for the 89 miles. It's never happened to me.

The VA website doesn't say anything about only paying reimbursment to the nearest VA facility, it says "mileage reimbursment".
See their website at:
https://www.va.gov/healthbenefits/access/Beneficiary_travel.asp

Careful reading of the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) brings up this tid-bit:

12.What if a veteran chooses to go to his “preferred” facility instead of the closest VA facility that can provide the care?
Veterans have the choice to go to any VA facility they choose for care. However, travel can only be authorized to the nearest facility that can provide the needed care. Therefore, should a veteran choose to go to another facility than that closest to his home, they are responsible for any costs beyond that for transportation to the nearest facility. This includes mileage and special mode of transportation.

So if you had an option to go to your local VA facility and chose to go to the one further away, then they were allowed to only pay for travel to the local facility.

So the question is: who made the decision for you to go to the facility further away?

The VA hospital sent me a letter and told me that I need to make an appt. with my VA doctor (The letter included my doctor's name). I made the appt. with my doctor of 6 years. They said nothing about the  out patient clinic till I went to get my travel pay.
I guess next year I will have to make the appt. with a CBOC doctor. Another new doctor to deal with.

Larry, we have the same set up here, a local CBOC and then a regional hospital 60 miles away.  BUT, our local CBOC runs a shuttle service to the distant hospital.  so check to see if yours does this.
