OK ONE AND ALL.  iN THE MAIL YESTERDAY i RECEIVED THE NEWS i HAVE BEEN WAITING ON FOR MONTHS.  VA HAS AWARDED 30% FOR ISCHEMIC HEART AND i HAVE BEEN DRAWING 10% FOR DIABETIS FOR A COUPLE YEARS.  SO, NOW I AM AT 40 % RETRO ACTIVE TO JUNE 2006. bEING RETIRED I NOW HAVE TO WAIT FOR DEFENSE DEPT TO DETERMINE THE OFF-SET BETWEEN VA AND MILITARY RETIREMENT AND OR AND ADDITIONAL AMOUNT FROM DOD AS IT IS COMBAT RELATED -SERVICE CONNECTED.  STAY THE COURSE; DON'T GIVE UP AND GOOD THINGS WILL COME OF THIS.  KEEP IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH YOUR REPS AND AFTER 6 MONTHS TO A YEAR...YOU SHOULD HEAR SOMETHING.  THE REPORT I RECEIVED YESTERDAY IS 25 PAGES LONG INCLUDING SOME BLANK FORMS FOR EDUCATION, TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENT, DEPENDENTS, ETC.  EACH AWARD IS INDIVIDULIZED SO IT IS NOT A "CANNED" RESPONSE.  BEST TO ALL AND GOOD LUCK.

Quoted from DocMosher, posted October 24th, 2011, 10:56pm at here
Finally heard something from the VA - got a 60% disability for ischemic heart disease.  Applied a year ago.  And I've heard that here in Illinois, we have a one of the slowest responses times from the VA.

-Doc

Doc  what do you have ...stent or open heart to receive 60% I have 1 stent and they gave me 10 %

Ralph...I had open heart w/3 grafts and a pacemaker and received 30%.  Not sure how they arrive at the % level, but at least it's a recognition that it was service connected. That is a major plus.

Got my reward today for ischemic heart desease 10%. They said this wasn't their final decision. They would make it at a later date. Does everyone's letter state this?

Larry.  Congrats in finally hearing and the 10%.  Not sure about a decision coming later.  Haven't heard that before but doesn't mean there won't be more coming. I still haven't heard on Tinnituis and Hearing loss claim I submitted along w/the heart, etc. so I am grateful the heart came thru at 30% and I'll bide my time till I hear on the remainder.

OK! Since my last post in Nov 2011 I have this week received my award of an additional 10% (now 50%), for diabetis (10), eschemic heart (30) and tinnitus.(10) Hearing loss is considered service connected also, but 0% awarded?????. I am providing this as an update to Larry and other who have been waiting for some time for answers to their claims.  Hang in there.

Bill got my award for PTSD, but was not awarded for tinnitus. I worked in a coal mine and they said that was the cause of it. I filed an appeal. It is an uphill battle all the time with the VA.

Latest update:  Just found out that although the VA awarded 10% for the tinitus it DID NOT increase my 40% for other awards to 50% as I stated earlier.  After some investigation, I find (being retired military,) they still reduce my retired pay by the amount awarded by VA (it is tax exempt) but it is not an INCREASE in pay. After my investigation, I found that if you are at 50% or higher, and retired from the military, the VA AWARD is in addition to your retired pay, not subtracted from it.  Also the 0% for hearing is considered  AN AWARD with no compensation BUT STILL service connected.  GO FIGURE.  Also that statement said this is administered by DOD not VA, so Monday a call will be going to DFAS along w/a simple question....WHY?

Update..I called DFAS on Monday and fiound that even though administered by DOD the VA is responsible for THIER portion and that DFAS cannot respond to any questions relating to VA.  SO a call to VA is forthcoming in the next few days.  I think I will appeal through DVA and let them handle this as my rep.
