I just got around to using my military medical benefits last February. My private insurance just got too expensive and my medication co-pay was ridiculous.
To know: the HiepDuc & QueSon valleys were sprayed with agent orange.
As I went through the process of getting my VA card, initial physical exam etc. I told them that I had had a heart attack back in 2004. They put in two stints to correct my problem.
There was some discussion that the VA may be considering disability of heart conditions from exposure to agent orange.
Last month the VA had me go to an independent clinic for evaluation. I took my medical info from my heart attack/stints with me to the evaluation physical.
I just got my letter from the VA. They have awarded me 30% disability for my heart condition/stints retro back to May 2010.
If you have a heart condition fill out the paperwork. If you qualify that's another 30% disability for just that condition. |

Jack, I also had much the same experience and in Apr 2010 applied through the Service Officer for service connected with Agent Orange. I had a MI with 2 stents and a Mets level of 3-5 getting a 60% rating with some retro back to july 2003. I recommend that anyone with heart issues contact the VA. There are also many cancers that are inclued with Agent Orange exposure. |

When dealing with the VA, never let up. That is with the initial contact with the bureaucracy especially. You are dealing with the local officials of a huge national chain of command. Often the local people are loose cannons and interpreting policy very differently than the folks in the same positions in your neighborning states. Key to your future health care is a very serious consideration and you should definitely discuss it with your peers.
There are people in the evaluation who make a lot of money and/or feel a surge of power through denial of service. Do NOT deal with your intake by yourself! Get a knowledgeable Service Officer who is well versed in the VA tangles to represent you. Even then, some SO's are A+ and some are SO..... B's. I went through three of them in four years and finally encountered one that actually worked my file. The others were too busy with golf and power lunches or just sitting around BS'ing.
If you do hook up with an SO that doesn't seem to be working, get away! Evaluate them and fire them before a year elapses because your case will expire and you will start from day zero again. Your case will be continuous if you fire them in under a year.
A very dear friend of my son married a girl who'se father lost a lung in Vietnam. The VA magnaminously awarded him 10% in the 1980's. He struggled with them and they finally bumped him to 30% before he died of congestive heart failure about ten years ago. His family, at my urging, is still fighting the VA for the screwing and it looks like they will win. I wonder who got the bonus for saving all that disability for the VA. |

Hey all, I got this from a buddy.
Burdette Burkhart
Department Adjutant
Nebraska American Legion
WARNING TO VETERANS
Forwarded by Kevin Secor, VSO Liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
An organization called Veterans Affairs Services (VAS) is providing benefit and general information on VA and gathering personal information on veterans. This organization is not affiliated with VA in any way
[Websites with the name "vaservices" immediately after the "www" ARE NOT part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the US Government agency. D o not go to them or if approached or called, do not offer them any information concerning yourself or data on other veterans.
Keep in mind that the real VA website ends in .gov. Also, be aware that the Department of Veterans Affairs does not randomly call veterans, nor does it ask veterans for information which it does not already have--like Social Security Numbers. In particular, if you have not dealt with the VA previously--and in person--and all of a sudden, you receive a call from someone saying they are with the VA or something similar sounding, hang up the phone. Also, do not respond to emails which suggest that they are from the VA. The VA never conducts official business nor asks for personal information by email. Mike]
VAS may be gaining access to military personnel through their close resemblance to the VA name and seal. Our Legal Counsel has request ed that we coordinate with DoD to inform military installations, particularly mobilization sites, of this group and their lack of affiliation or endorsement by VA to provide any services.
In addition, GC requests that if you have any examples of VAS acts that violate chapter 59 of Title 38 United States Code, such as VAS employees assisting veterans in the preparation and presentation of claims for benefits, please pass any additional information to Mr.Daugherty at the address below.

Was with B co. 2/1, Aug 70 - Aug71, Suffered ischemic heart attack in 06. Filed paperwork last Dec. and received phone call today telling me I received 60% disability rating. Sure hope someone wasn't scamming me. Still waiting on the hearing loss and PTSD claims.
Has not been the hassle I expected through VA. So my spirits are up about everything.
Thought I would at least let everyone know how fast my paper work went through.

Got the official paperwork in the mail last week on my disability rating, while we where out of town. Did find out that I filed last August, so it took 7 months to run it through. Happened to check my bank account on line and found a deposit from the VA.
Now if we can get the PTSD and hearing loss straightened out........

Teacher, good news and I'm glad to hear it. Good luck in getting your other claims approved. Its sad that veterans have to go through so much trouble to get only what they deserve. |

Larry , how does one know if they have an ischemic heart disease? the doctor listens to the heart or there are symptoms the patient can feel? or they hook you up to a machine?
Thanks

Frenchie, in the latter of 2009 I felt like my heart was skipping beats and my blood pressure would go up. Had a stress test in Feb 2007 and another in Jan 2010, It was read by the same doctor, results was that I had had a heart attack between those times. After a couple more test, lower part of heart wasn't filling up with blood all the time. They can't do a cath or CT scan, because the iodine (salt) they use would shut down my only kidney. Results if I have chest pains, get to the emer. room. The doctor wrote on the fact sheet the VA sent that I have ischemic heart desease. Treatment now is blood thinner. |

Frenchie:
When I asked my heart doctor just what an ischemic heart attack was. He told me that ischemic meant that there was a blocked or clogged artery to the heart. My left ventricular artery was blocked any repaired with a stent. Other blockage showed, but is being taken care of with medication. Once he told me that, that's when I filed my paperwork.
