I have a note from a Paul Knowles. "I am trying to research a soldier who served with D Company, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment between 4th November 1967 until he was killed on the 18th June 1968 in Quang Tin Province, South Vietnam. His name is Nathaniel Wade from Augusta, Georgia, and I understand he may have been killed as a result of 'friendly fire' I fully appreciate that you may not wish to be reminded or indeed feel the need to respond to a stranger about your time in Vietnam. I am just trying to keep Nathaniel Wades name alive and any information about where he served during his time with D Company would be most helpful. "
I do not recall him and if anyone can help, Paul would like to hear from you.

I did not remember his name but thought the timing was wrong. We were coming off LZ West to the West and night laager. Found an enemy mortar tube. Have picture of it with Co Lt. Griffin. We got resupplied and took off down the rest of the mountain when VC was spotted in our night laager where we got resupplied going threw what we left behind. We were then in a small village shearching the hooches. I called in a fire mission but was to close for the artillery and they gave to the 81 mortars. As I was told person dropped the mortar in the tube before he was told to fire and tried to catch the mortar. But fell and came out, he lost his thumb. Defected the mortar and landed in one of the hoohes which Wade was in searching. which he than came out holding his guts and collapsed.
As now Paul is looking for to return metals he came across. From Paul "I am delighted with your reply and offer to help and would like to extend my gratitude to those who have responded. I am not related to Nathaniel but I do have his service medals and a newspaper cutting with his obituary from the Augusta Chronicle dated the June 21st 1968. I was born in 1961 and live in a village near Shrewsbury, Shropshire in the UK. You are no doubt wondering how on earth does all this link together? I have no idea how Nathaniel's medals left the family in the USA, I'm assuming his parents died and their was simply no relative who thought of keeping them. They eventually made their way to Czechoslovakia where I acquired them. My grandfathers First World War medals were returned to me from Australia and I have never forgotten the gratitude I felt for the person responsible in returning them. He didn't have to. So, over the years I have researched 'lost' medals and on occasion when the opportunity arose returned them to their family's. We all owe those such as yourself a great deal, and I for one do not take for granted the freedom that I enjoy each day given to me by others. I joined the British Army to learn how to defend my country and thankfully never saw combat. The research I do is to remember those that did." |
