Hey guys
I also use my VA card at Lowes and always when I travel at any and all Hotels. Just ask them for the military rate and the VA ID works well. It is usually their best rate.

I hear you Frenchie... I remember when we once had been out in the field in the mud etc. for 15-18 days. We came to the rear in Chu Lai for clean clothes a hot meal and suposdly 3 days rest. There was a serious storm and rain that blew down some hangers at the Air Force base. We were commandered to go pick up 2x4s because the local dinks were stealing them to repair their cardboard hootches. Seems to me the rear echelons and the air force could have done this job but the Infantry was always tapped for the shit work. After fighting the war we were still low on the totem pole! Just venting myself and they wonder why I didn't want to re-up.

Well the fact is that there was only 7 support guys for 1 grunt. The grunts were by far a minority. I think that a high percentage of people that post on these sights were combat but most soldiers in the Nam were not grunts.

There is a place to sign the guestbook on this website to acknowledge the hard work Sgt Snuffy and others put into it. The maps are totally accurate and pretty much the same we used as line companies.
I have never been to a reunion as I just retired last month but want to go to one and meet all of you guys in person to say Thanks and Welcome Home Brothers!
We will of course stay in touch on this and other issues.

I can certainly say that talking to other 196 Vets has done me a world of good. Until the last 2 years I said nothing to nobody. Not even my kids. I too came home and burnt all of my letters which were a treasure of information how I would like that one back.
Lewis is you have not seen the VA for PTSD I encourage you to do just that. It will help and they are still paying Soldiers with combat MOS for stressors. Post and talk here though is the best remedy. We are all the same Brother.

also I need to mention this, you probably already know, but when we went to mortars we became part of Echo Company and even though we were still in Alpha our mail was addressed to Echo. Our rear area was still Alpha. Was 1st sergant Johson still there when you were?

The end of Oct I may have still been on 510. I remember a strong storm that washed a large section of the Que Son ridgline away which was straght east of 510. Those mountains had severe rain for centuries and to have a large washout likt that was significant. It may have been that typhoon. when we were in country we had no news about the names of typhoons. shortly into November we went to Tam Ky to take over a 198th firebase. We were there till 23 Nov. I remember because that's my birthday and we were mortared and sapper attacked that night. We KIA 12 dinks in the wire. We were 26 men strong but held our own. no casualties for us but pretty harry. We came back to Da Nang after that to LZ Maude.
Thanks for the info Jack

I have been posting on the guestbook for years and didn't make the conection to the forum. I found several guys from my unit and from my timeframe there. It took some reading and some time because the guestbook is huge but wort it to me. I will post here from now on but will continue to check the quest book since I'm caught up it won't take much time. Even after 40 years it still excites me to read posts and comment from my Brothers. I served in 1971 and have found numerous posts from then and from my unit.
Thanks

Negris was Commander on Hill 510 when I was there. He was West Point which helps in the quest to become General.

When we landed in Seattle it was 20 Dec 1971 and many Vets were there after getting sent home 5-6 days early for Christmas. The airport was full of uniformed Vets and the people spit on all of us. I don't know why, to this day, that we took it. We had just left the war and most had seen it all, but we did nothing. If I had it to do over I would whip every bastard there or die trying. The Stewardess from American airlines helped us by saying nice things and helping get us on the the extra fights to get us out of there and then Home. I was never told Welcome Home for 30 years. Finally a truck driver told me Welcome and I didn't even know what he meant. It's been downhill from there.
Thanks

Fellow Nam 196ers
I have not been able to talk to anyone for the last 40 years about the war because what the hell do you say to those that weren't there. I'm new to this forum and want to say thanks to all of you. Most everthing I read I can relate to and I am proud to have served with all of you guys. Thanks for the outlet and for the place to share. OK now everyone dry your eyes.

I had FUO 2 times and you have to remember that we were being treated by Spec4 Army guys and not doctors. In order to diagnose malaria they had to draw blood when the fever was high and identify the parasite under a microscope. There are 4 types of malaria and require different treatment. Most attempt to identify were unsuccessful, I lay on a cot at Hawk Hikk for several days with 106 fever and the spec 4  just had to call it FUO even though it was obviously malaria. Got it again stateside and Hines VA Chicago cured my 107 fever this time with Quinine.

Hey Jack I went through 2 typhoons. Didn't know that one was named Hester till now. I lost one day R&R because of the one in early July 71 because we couldn't get out of the field. Birds couldn't fly. My wife waited in Hawaii. The Army screwed me out of that day and my R&R was only 6 days. I was shot down over the Hiep Duc-Que Son ridgeline on 26 July right after I got back. I was medivaced to 95th in Da Nang but was back in the field 2 days later. Minor injuries but Purple Heart.

Hey Guys
I carried company radio, then Batallion radio and even the cipher-green machine and we always used strict procedures. Never any rank or numbers of men or anything which would compromise our position. some other units in our batallion were not as careful.

Hey Lewis
Just east of the MP checkpoint toward the PX was the 4/31st. They were in the 196th as well. My buddy Mike Hart was in that battalion. I lost track of him over there.

In April 1971 the 3/21st moved to Freedom Hill as a rear area near Da Nang. This was next to the MP chechpoint west of the PX on that blacktop road below the hill. We were on Hill 510 then for an AO and moved to LZ Maude much later in the year. We had a brief stint in Tam Ky to secure a firebase that was being abandonded by the 198th I think maybe this was Hill 65.
