Don Campbell.. How long did you have to wait for a flight after you submitted your application?  I'm asking, because I am finding in OHIO some flights are taking up to a year to schedule from applications submitted.  I have the paperwork filled out, just waiting to mail it. Thanks!  3/82 66-67
Hearing Aids   (reply)

Frenchie, Larry and all.  I was awarded 10% for tinitus (service connected) w/o additional dollars.  I am drawing 40% for heart and diabetis.  "Crickets" are what I hear all the time. Also the low ringing.  I was Artillery most of my 22 years so that is understandable. We were a noisy bunch.  Glad to hear that the hearing aids are helping some w/the tinitus.  I will have to check into that.  Thanks for the info.  I enjoy the forum.  Bill,3/82 66-67.

Gentlemen..I really enjoyed the posts I've just read on this subject.  I finished reading The Boys of '67 a few days ago.  My daughter bought it for me for Christmas.  I am grateful to have read this book as it gives me a totally different understanding and appreciation of the need for us Redlegs to expend ammo on a continous basis.  I was honored to have served in "B" Btry/8th Arty in Hawaii 58-61 as a gun section chief as part of the 25th Inf. I remember my assignemnt to Ft Devins in March '66 and the trip to Ft Drum, NY to train in Riot Control for Santa Domingo. I remember the section chiefs being called into the cP and told to CSMO as we were h contacteading back to Devins as we had a change of orders.  After a 10 day leave I...

Update..I called DFAS on Monday and fiound that even though administered by DOD the VA is responsible for THIER portion and that DFAS cannot respond to any questions relating to VA.  SO a call to VA is forthcoming in the next few days.  I think I will appeal through DVA and let them handle this as my rep.

Latest update:  Just found out that although the VA awarded 10% for the tinitus it DID NOT increase my 40% for other awards to 50% as I stated earlier.  After some investigation, I find (being retired military,) they still reduce my retired pay by the amount awarded by VA (it is tax exempt) but it is not an INCREASE in pay. After my investigation, I found that if you are at 50% or higher, and retired from the military, the VA AWARD is in addition to your retired pay, not subtracted from it.  Also the 0% for hearing is considered  AN AWARD with no compensation BUT STILL service connected.  GO FIGURE.  Also that statement said this is administered by DOD not VA, so Monday a call will be going to DFAS along w/a si...

Since my last post in Nov 2011 I have this week received my award of an additional 10% (now 50%), for diabetis (10), eschemic heart (30) and tinnitus.(10) Hearing loss is considered service connected also, but 0% awarded?????. I am providing this as an update to Larry and other who have been waiting for some time for answers to their claims.  Hang in there.

Bob,
I don't remember a pagoda type bldg on the field, but as I said before, we were hit w/mortars as soon as we landed so that time is somewhat fuzzy.  I do know that after we established basecamp we built my ammo dump on the strip and they installed, at a later date, fuel bladders at the far  end of the strip and the MP gate was at that far end also.  I think 8th Support was across the strip.  It has been 45 years since we touched down and at 78 yrs old a lot of what was is, at best, a sad memory.  Thanks for the inquiry Bob.  Not sure if I helped answer your question or not.

Larry.  Congrats in finally hearing and the 10%.  Not sure about a decision coming later.  Haven't heard that before but doesn't mean there won't be more coming. I still haven't heard on Tinnituis and Hearing loss claim I submitted along w/the heart, etc. so I am grateful the heart came thru at 30% and I'll bide my time till I hear on the remainder.

Ralph...I had open heart w/3 grafts and a pacemaker and received 30%.  Not sure how they arrive at the % level, but at least it's a recognition that it was service connected. That is a major plus.

I was the Bn Ammo Sgt for 3/82 and was one of 25 from the Arty that flew from Devins thru Alaska to Saigon.  I remember they billeted us in a warehouse that was full of supplies for the field and also caskets.  I remember one of the troops had his picture taken in the casket and the undeveloped roll was sent to his parents by him.  He was later KIA and I can't imagine the heartbreak his parents and anyone viewing the pictures, must have felt.  One of many sad stories of the war.  We established basecamp w/the help of the Wolfhounds as security and the Engineers and my understanding the Seabees.  They built the airstrip on what was a soccer field and assisted us in clearing out the peanuts fields and the ant hil...

Thanks Larry and frenchie.  To answer your question...YES!  I have called numerous times and aI'm told it has not gone to the board for a decision, and that is all they say.  Seems strange when I read the other day about 84,000 claims had been decided due to Agent Orange.  They indicate the claim is in the Development Stage, meaning No Deceision has been made..  I agree Larry....Fast Trac or Track is a misnomer for sure. Thank you guys for your service in 4/31 and 2/1. I'm sure we sent a lot of steel your way in support of your operations.  Glad we could assist. Bill 66-67 HHB 3/82

I am presently drawing 10% for type 2 diabetis.  Have applied for ischemic heart almost a year ago.  Had triple by-pass in 1987 and pacemaker implanted in 2004.  Claim was filed in FL initally at a reunion for VN veterans in Melbourne.  Claim was sent to St Pete, FL; forwarded to Cleveland, ended up in Auburn, WA.  Was later told by DAV in Cincinnati that it should have been filed in WVA and lastly talked to a DAV rep on October 6, 2011 and he indicated he would return to Cleveland on Oct 17 and check it out and give me a call.  I received a call from WA in Feb 2011 that the heart claim could be forwarded to the board for decision and the remainder of my claim would be decided after I had a VA medical evaluatio...

I would suggest a discussion on what we found as an advance party.  When the main body arrived a lot of the work was done, although we continued to improve the base camp site, but the initial touchdown in Saigon to the touchdown in Tay Ninh and the ensuing year.  How many convoys did we make to resupply ammo to forward positions, how many airlifts of howitzers and A-22 bags of ammo did we do and what did we encounter?  We were in a different war upon arrival vs what the remainder of the Brigade encountered over the next 6 years.  I read the guestbook frequently and find most of the postings are like a foreign language..nothing seems familiar including FB's etc.  I take my hat off to all who came after us.  You ...
