On 1 2 69 we lost Charles Groh after Nui Chom in Antenna Valley...I think he was a 3rd Platoon man...that day the company was attacking an AA position...Charles somehow was separated from his platoon and when they found him later he was KIA with empty magazines all around him so im told...fought to the end.

As it was i had met the man once...at that time he came on Baldy for whatever reason back in October 1968.  We small talked and  I learned he was from NY (state? i think). and we were talking M16 stuff and mentioned to him that i had a chrome bolt in my M16.  At that time the chrome bolt was desirable by the men as the word was out that the M16 was less apt to jam and function better.  So that day we exchanged bolts from our M16...that was the first and only time i saw him

RIP CHarles Groh

Frenchie,  you are right, he was from  NY City and he was  E4 and 20 years old when he was KIA. I looked him up on the Honor Roll.  I usually don't go to the Honor Roll because it is so sad to see so many of our Brothers who gave their lives.  As I look at page after page of names,  what strikes me is how young they were, just kids, like we were.  What a waste of life!  And we all have friends on that Honor Roll. While we will always remember them, seeing their names listed there raises too many bad memories and demons that have been long suppressed.   RIP Charles Groh and all our fallen Brothers, and never be forgotten.

Bob, i barely knew the man....just met him that one time and we exchanged bolts but he left a positive impression on me ..a good guy, one could tell. I tell people normally if a guy was from a different platoon more than likely we would not meet up and they might as well be from a different planet....not in this case and a couple other case i recall

Hi Frenchie,
I still remember well the day we lost Charlie. Lots of action!  I have a few pictures, a purple heart, and a news report from the Southern Cross describing the battle. I can email them to you if you're interested.  When the 3rd platoon was airlifted back to the LZ after taking out the AA gun a head count was taken and it was discovered that Charlie was missing. It was already nighttime so a search crew didn't return to the area until first light. I heard (but can't verify) that they found his body mutilated along with the empty magazines

Thanks Doc......i heard the same thing while i was on Baldy in regards to the empty magazines and the mutilation...i recall the assault against the AA....i dont know who told me but someone mentioned the chopper pilots were grateful for us taking out that AA gun.  Im sure i have the article somewhere......also the report from Les Hines
I recall talking to the man for just a brief moment that day...and he was on his way...he probably was on his way to RR  (just a guess)
My first impression was that he was a good man...still is.
Dont know if you knew him......but Lt Proffitt passed away early this year...he was the 2nd platoon Ldr and later on he ran the LZ on  LZ West.
