Memories of New Years Eve 1968...By that time i was on LZ Baldy and i was the guy who went to the field with clean clothe and mail.....on New Years Eve i dropped clean clothe and mail to our company who was in Antenna Valley on LZ Ryder where our Co C was....at midnight flares lit up the sky from one end of the valley to the other in all directions....this lasted several minutes...that night i had no place to crash and no poncho liner... no "home" and it looked like it might rain that night...

While darkness was creeping up on us i stumbled on an area that had a piece of corrugated metal overhead and it looked like that would be a great place to sleep and stay dry....no guard duty, no patrolling at night and I would be at least staying dry ...doesnt get any better than that i figured......so i quickly fell asleep....next morning at day break i hear voices and some guy  (one of ours) is standing over me and he was not giving me a Happy New Years greeting!!! he was a bit angry...lecturing me ....im thinking wtf is he upset about...welllllllllllll i didnt notice in the darkness but i had slept at the arty 105mm ammo bunker...so the Lt was not too pleased with me......i got the heck out of the ammo bunker pronto..
that morning there was a 3 B52 air strike in the distance and in a couple hours i was back on Baldy.......at least i got to see my guys in our platoon ...

Happy new Years men.

New Years eve 67. I had been granted a 3 day in country R&R to visit my brother in Cam Rahn Bay. He was Air Force E5 so he took me to the NCO club. There was a live American band, plenty of food and drink. I was only 18 so beer only. I had a great time.

Happy New Year to all

Happy New Year Jim, Frenchie and all  Charger Brothers.  May it be a safe and healthy one with a lot of enjoyable adventures with family and friends.   Jim,  it sure sounds like your New Years eve was a lot more fun than Frenchie's!    New Years eve  68.  I really can't remember much about it. I was also on LZ Baldy, I think.  If not , it was Hill 35.  I do remember, as you mention Frenchie, that, at midnight flares lit up the sky in all directions, a pretty spectacular sight!

At one time or another before the move north, most 196th units spent a few days or weeks providing security for the "laterite pit," a mining operation getting a gooey sort of gravel for road construction.
The area was right up against Nui Ba Den, the huge (and only) mountain that stood above the whole region.
A 2/1 had the duty and there was a stand down for New Year's eve in 1966 and the day or two of quiet was pretty nice, though the company took serious casualties the day after from a booby-trapped artillery shell.
In honor of the cease fire, I don't think we fired off much stuff, but for the days before and after we did have an attached twin 75mm anti-aircraft gun that could really light up the side of the mountain. We had the bottom and the top and VC had everything in between; there were so many caves, it is unlikely that that leftover WWII gun did much harm.
The Black Virgin Mountain now has a tramway and is a popular tourist stop.
Hoping all here have a good 2014.

Bob, Frenchie, and others.  I remember Christmas 67 very well.
Christmas eve we were told that we would not be resupplied. A few of us bought a chicken from a farmer along with some rice. Well we boiled the heck out of that chicken and we had that for dinner Christmas eve.
We had stayed on the side of a hill where there was a small village. We took turns during the night going into the farmers barn and eating his raw peanuts.
We all thought that was going to be it until Dec 26th a day after Christmas.
Well lo and behold around 1600 hours we got resupplied along with a hot turkey dinner. Man were we glad.

I met you at Baldy when I came to the company....it was a spooky place. I have a picture of a cliff I think was to the east that dropped down a long ways. Made it easier to sleep at night....nobody was coning up that side of the hill.

Ralph your memory is clearer than mine....in the few months i was on Baldy i met a bunch headed to the field and i normally would ask to go thru their pack to weed out (no pun intended) all the junk they were carrying out there......such as after shave lotion etc
