Had to look up some old posts to find some dates, but got a letter yesterday from the Dept. of the Army concerning my update request on my DD214. Sent request in the last of Aug 12, notified that letter was received and in process in Nov.12. Recent letter confirmed that my DD214 would be corrected to show Bronze Star(First Oak Leaf), & Air Medal, which is all I thought was missing. In addition, they have added the Good Conduct Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with crossed palms. So it has been approximately 6 months from start to finish. Course this is from the review board signing off on it, actual record change will still take a while they say due to the backlog. In the letter from the review board, they went into considerable detail documenting everything, I was impressed. Well worth the effort after all the years to correct something.

Don could you go through the steps to get an updated DD214. The one I have is a copy of the one they gave me when I got out. It does show my CIB and Viet Nam service but that’s all. |

Joe:
Go on line and look up Form DD149. That is used for correction of military records. In fact, you can fill the form out on line and then print it. Address where to be sent is on form. I had information on 2 of my awards and attached copies with my request. The review board dug deeper and discovered that I was also intitled to the Good Conduct medal and VCOG. From what I can tell, they did a pretty thorough search threw my records.
Years ago, I received a copy of orders for an Air Medal. Some clerk wasn't paying attention and sent me someone else's orders who had the same name. I wrote the National Archives and they sent me a copy of my orders. That's how come I had the information to turn in.
It will take some time, but you should get some results. Let me know how you come out.

Don, Congratulations! I'm glad to hear that they are, apparently, making a sincere effort to respond to DD 214 upgrade requests and putting the time in to ensure that they are complete and accurate. Thanks for keeping us informed. Hopefully, others will have a similar experience. |
