Just finished watching an old movie, "The General's Daughter" with John Travolta, 1999.  He is CID investigating a murder.  He is a Vietnam Vet, as is the General. When they are shown wearing their uniforms, both are sporting the 196th LIB patch in all its burning glory!

Not a bad movie, really nothing to do with Vietnam either.

I saw that too a number of years ago, and was also struck by the 196th patch on their right shoulders.  But after I got back from Vietnam (and the 196th) our new first sergeant told us we had to wear the Americal patch instead because the overseas unit patch had to be division level.  I never heard if the movie was just taking creative license or if our first sergeant was wrong.

Altough my 1969 state side unit never enforced it, i believe your 1st sgt is correct..i had heard something similar and i got there in 1968..
Having said all that , I would think that the original 196th guys probably could wear their patch...as long as they were 196th LIB prior to the Americal Division being created..

After the 196 went seperate from division the patch became authorized as a combat patch and could be worn on the right shoulder.

When I returned from Viet Nam (Aug 67) I was sent to Fort Hood. We had an IG inspection in the spring of 68. At one of the rehearsal inspections I was gigged by the battalion Colonel for not displaying a combat patch while wearing a CIB.  I explained that there were no 196th patches available. He said I could wear the Americal Patch. I explained that I had won my CIB in the 196th and was never in the Americal and would only wear MY patch . There were about 40 or 50 of us in the battalion. A week later the 196th patch was available.

Frenchie & Steve are correct. If you came home from the 196th before it was attached to the Americal you wear the 196thLIB patch because it was a stand alone brigade, not attached to a division. This was also true when Steve and I were in A 3/21 in 1971.

When the Americal (11thLIB & 198thLIB) went home in the summer of 1971 the 196thLIB went back to being a stand alone brigade, not attached to division. So those of us who came home from the 196th in the fall of 71~1972 wear the 196thLIB combat patch.

In reality, the guys that stayed to August 72 should be wearing a patch for the 3/21 "Gimlets" battalion since they got left behind when the 196thLIB went home ;-)

James,  I was there in 67-68 also and we were an independent unit. After a few months we were incorporated into the Americal Div. Everyone resisted the switch from the 196th patch to Americal's.  As far as I can remember, no one wore the Americal patch.  The only time I ever wore it was on my MP arm band. Our 196 patched arm bands were replaced with Americal  ones. We had no choice.  I had a year to do at Ft. Bragg when I got back to the world. All of my class A and fatigue uniforms had the 196th LIB patch on the right shoulder.  I don't remember ever running across any one else with the 196th patch.  I wore it proudly and was never questioned about it. I saved one class A uniform and the 196th patch is still proudly displayed on the right shoulder.  Jack, you're absolutely right, the Calli incident didn't do much to promote the wearing of the Americal patch.

ANOTHER PATCH SIGHTING!  (Besides "Tour of Duty")

If you saw the movie "Uncommon Valor", there was a scene where Gene Hackman was watching the returning POWs deplane (on TV).  The camera backs away from the TV and there is a frame with his son's picture, medals, and a 196th Patch!

Go Chargers! (not the football team)

Not a patch but scored a copy of the Chargers segment of the Illustrated History of the Vietnam War at a bookstore locally.  That and Time Life Vietnam Experience Combat Photographer all for 13 bucks.

I was in C 3/21, 196th from Dec 66 - Dec67.  Those of us who were there prior to the formation of Task Force Oregon (TFO) which became the Americal Division were grandfathered on the 196th patch.  We had the option to wear either patch but most remained with the 196th patch.  I remember going on R&R and we had to wear our unit patch on our khakis.  We had a hang tag on the right(?) pocket that was the 196th patch.  Mine was made in country and was encased in a heavy cellophane pocket with a leather tag attached.  I remained in the Army for the next 20 years, retiring in 1988.  Always wore the 196th patch on all uniforms and was never challenged.  I was, and still am, very proud to have served in the 196th.  I fly a US flag & a 196th flag in my yard 24/7/365.  I also have the patch proudly displayed on my pickup, all over inside my home and have it tattooed on my right arm, where it belongs forever!  [tr]

Jim, Warren,  I echo your comments and thank all  Chargers, VN vets and all veterans for their service.  I, too, proudly display the 196th decals and emblems on my old Ford Explorer and even older Jeep Wrangler.  I  look for military decals in my travels and have seen many USMC, 1st Cav, Screaming Eagles, etc decals, but I still have not sighted a 196th decal! I keep looking, though.
