Here is a message passed on to me original from Lt. General Sam Wetzel:

I am writing the book of my life which began in 1930 when I was born in Clarksburg, WV. At this moment I have finished my life from birth, during the Depression, WW II, Korean War etc.and I am now up to 1968 in Vietnam. It will go later to the day I retired in 1986. and some time afterward. Since I am now 80 I thought I better get going with it if I am going to finish it.

Here is what I need your help with during the period from 23 July 1968 to 10 January 1969 and your recollections will be mentioned by name and rank in the book.Just during that period.

I have the Americal Newspaper write up of the Nui Chom Battle, but I want to get more specific individuals named in my description of that battle

Where possible specific actions (and the dates) your were involved in during the period. Even small firefights and the dates and what happened and names of the soldiers.

A few Examples for Charlie Company I remember:

The buried Russian Chemical Company gear. Who found it and anything you remember about it.

The day I sent your Charlie Company into Nui Chom Mountain and your recollections of that battle day by day.

Antenna Valley up until I left on 10 January 1969 Was it Charlie Company that were running out the NVA from a Village when I had my Chopper low to ground level firing at them when they ran out into the open or into the ditches?

On LZ West the Quad 50 we fired down south during the night with plunging fire that surprised the NVA

The Zappers- incidents of them running fast to surprise the bad guys.

LZ Mellon and the Visit of General Abrams who visited your positions with me.
--------------------------------------------------
Delta Company:

Watching Agent Orange being sprayed on our positions while I was in the field talking to Capt Ordway. I was mad as hell since we controlled our airspace and no air flights or arty fire was allowed without my permission.

Nui Chom Mountain: The initial fight when Captain  Ordway was hit and blinded and 1st Sgt Neely was wounded. Butch Harris was the RTO and gave me my initial contact and passed instructions to the Platoons from me until I could get to the area.. Then we went in and got the wounded out and I had Delta set up defensive positions  to maintain contact with the 21st NVA Regiment so I could then start moving Companies up the fingers of the mountain.  Who was the Arty FO for Delta Company at the time?

Delta  being pulled back off the mountain to LZ West.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I may think of some other things for Charlie and Delta. For the other Companies, if anyone in the Namrats group was in the other companies, please send me your recollections for the period involved.

For all: I have on my desk the list and hometowns of our KIA's and the day they were killed during the period. What I do not have are those that were wounded and evacuated and the dates.

Please include names of all Polar Bears with you in your squads, and Squad, Platoon Company Commanders names.

Remember: dates and names.

Many thanks to all.

Pro Patria, Sam

I met the General at the 31st rgt reunion here in Tacoma several years back.  He and I were the only 4th bn members present.  He was a treat to talk to and we had a very good time talking even though my tour didn't start until mid 69.  I hope he comes to the 196th reunion here in Bellevue this year.

My name is Terry Fowler I was at the battle of Nui Chom. Sp4 Fowler 23 July 68, to 23
July 69. Your book is probably  finished by now. My recollection of certain events I'll
try to explain from my memory. I am no good at names but just a few . We were sent
up the mountain to help either A Co, or Delta Co, One of them. The climb up was steep and it was a higher altitude to climb up and then to go down like a camel hump.
We did that to get the element of suprise to the NVA. Our point man spotted the enemy and pointed to the position he was at, and as he pointed he was shot and killed. His name was Buck and they said he was 18yrs old. That started our firefight and the battle was on. That was I beleive three days before thanksgiving because we
had to blow up trees to get the Huey's in to bring in our supplies. We had Thanksgiving dinner on top of that mountain.  Our Co was shot in the chest, I beleive
the left lung and he was hoisted out with a long rope by helicopter through the tree tops. I was a grenidier and one of our other grenidiers was shot and killed, I think is name was Taylor. There were two NVA in a crawl space dug in the hill and one on each side of the hole, our top NCO fired two maybe three M72 LAW wepons and blew the hell out of them. When we were through there were 21 or 23 dead NVA, scattered around in different locations. The stench of death stayed with us till we got off that damm mountain. They replaced our Capt with Maj Conder, I thought he was a great
Commander. I don't think this will help in your book but it helped me just to reflect on it. I think we lost five KIA's that day. But I was only 18 at the time my recollection to
details may not be exact.

Correction on the MAJ's Name, it may have been MAJ Conners in ref to the Nui Chom
battle I posted 26 Nov 2011 and I was a PFC at the time, because I got promoted to SP4 in Dec of 68, during another conflict.

Sam Wetzel is still alive and has biographical material on the web.
The best I can tell, none of those pages mention his autobiography.

My buddy Fat Jack Norris was in Bravo company in January of 69 and his recollection of the the company commander at that time was a Captain Condon.  Could that be the same guy?  I know I get the names a little shifted.
