For my own curiosity, how many of you went home on leave from Nam and went back to finish your tour. Im not talking legally...but rather under the radar. In my case when i left, the monsoon was in full force (september68) and when i finally got home thats the month they had the most rain in years...hated that rain...couldnt get away from it. |

Not me either. I thought about it but never seriously considered it because I didn't trust myself to come back. We had a guy who did and he said it was like heaven and hell. Heaven when he was home and hell when he came back. I believe it. |

Shoot, I didn't even go home when my Dad came over, we signed petitions so we both stayed. I had half my tour done but they told me I had to come back when Dad left. No way was I coming back:-) Like James I had over a year left when I did return but got in with the Third Herd at Arlington, so was pretty safe in not having to return. Then got an early out to return to college.

I was offered promotion to Captain, but had to extend and knew I would be right back in Nam. My wife told me if I did she would divorce me so they gave me early out with another three years in the reserves to finish my commitment as officer. Sad to say end up in divorce anyways..... But have great family now and going on 34 years of marriage with great wife. |

I was a member of B 2/1 from 1971 to 1972. I actually reenlisted while in Vietnam, went home for 2 weeks, and then came back. I know of several others that reenlisted at the same time and a couple of them decided not to come back. I am proud of me time with the 196th and have not really connected with anyone since that time. |

I've never heard of anyone who reenlisted while in country, but I'm sure there are others. Keep checking this site and the Guestbook and you will probably run across someone you know. Welcome aboard! |

A while back i learned (from him) that one of our guys RE-UPPED to get out of the field. At that time we had just come out of a nasty firefight south of LZ West so i guess it made some sense....he made it a career.... Me i had a job in the rear at the end of my tour and i was asked to extend for 30 days and they said i would be out 6 months early.... i said NO way Jose' i didnt want to get p.o'd and shipped me back to the field.......8 months was more than enough for me.
But i did cheat and made it home (my own expense) on R&R...yes i went back |

Fletch, that must have been great, but it must have been extremely difficult coming back! I tried to get a R&R to Hawaii to get together with my girl friend. I was told no wife, no Hawaii. Disappointed at the time, but, the Army got that one right! |

I was transfered to the 25th Div in Jan 1967, when the originals of the 196th from Ft Devens were being split up. I had already been to Taiwan, but when I got to the 25th they asked who hadn't been on R&R yet. I, and most of the others from the 196th, figured if they had to ask, they must not have any records, so we all raised our hands. I wanted to go back to Taiwan, but I was in the field for 72 days and they told me I could go to Hawaii if I'd go the next day. My plan was to arrive in Hawaii and immediatly get a plane back to NY and go home for 5 days to NJ. When I got to Hawaii, I knew that I would never come back, so I stayed in Hawaii for R&R with two others from my platoon. |
