I have aked John Frankel's son for any info he has on his Dad's unit at time of death and all documentation says C 2/1.

Joe Greear C 3/21 remembers John as his friend and platoon Sgt in C 3/21.

We are continuing to search for more info to sort this out.

Feel free to add your comments.  Anything we can dig up will help.

Thanks for the new thread.  The darn Guestbook will refuse a post with no reason and erase what you wrote; after two or three tries, I say the heck with it.  I wonder how many posts over the years have never made it.
I assume that Joe Greear has contacted Tony Frankel with not only the mixup about John Frankel's unit, but also with answers to his questions about his father's service and death.
There is a post at http://thewall-usa.com/info.asp?recid=17024 with a folllow-up at
http://thewall-usa.com/guest.asp?recid=17024 about SSGT Frankel.
Both John Paul Bates and the radio man Blevens mentioned are in the C 3/21 Fort Devens photo.
There is sadly also a post by SSGT Fankel's wife Margret from nearly seven years ago asking for the same information Tony is seeking now.
I hope that the involvement of the this forum will satisfy those old questions.
It is also worthwhile to explore the avenues of correcting the unit information, etc. about John Frankel.

Glad to see Warren posted this request here, but unless Tony Frankel signs up for this forum, he won't be able to see the thread.
Jim, the guestbook works, but if you don't enter comments or put in the correct security code it will not accept the post. It is easy enough to see if the post made it by just refreshing the Guestbook page and looking for the post.

From John Bates' comment on Sgt Frankel's memorial page, it looks as if he and his RTO SP4 James Robert Blevins were killed together.  Their dates of casualty are 11/4 ans 11/5, however, and SP4 Blevins is listed as from C 3 2/1.
There is a suggestion, as well, that the cause might have been friendly fire, from a 155 short round.
I find Mr. Bates' comment quite moving.  He offers a phone number and email for more info.

Excellent info Jim.   That's exactly what we are looking for to support Joe Greear's comment that SSG Frankel was indeed a C 3/21, Charlie Tiger.  I will get with our Honor Roll coordinator, Joe Hahoney & Ken McKenzie about getting this fixed on the next revision.  I will also contact the webmaster for C 2/1 to inform him of the error.  Thanks for the suggestion that we take this issue to the Forum.  It's still so new that I tend to forget it's now available for just such issues as this.

Just got a call from Charlie Tiger, Dale Flickinger, C 3/21, 65-67.  Dale won a SIlver Star during Attleboro and verified that SSG John Frankel was a Charlie Tiger.  Keep 'em comin' guys.  We've already got enough to make the correction but this is a good thread.

A point of record to show how a person could move before the Green Machine caught up. I came in Country to C Med 8th Spt. Jun 67 was on the pennisula at 4/31 Aid Station next day for a week or so No Orders. Went over to HHC196th Aid Station No Orders, Out to 1/1Cavalry Jan 68. Offical records had me at C Med until Feb68.

The Green Machine at 23rd Admin never issued orders to go home. Oh our bad we couldn't find you at 196th ( gave port call to Admin Section Sgt.)

My point is the record is not always Gospel. OBW I left Chu Lai on Standby Orders the day after I went to 23 Admin and said it is time for me to Deros

But remember I was a Medic and people care for you if their life depends on you

Larry Harper of C 2/1 chimed in today and agrees that Frankel was wrongly posted under his unit.  We will get Frankel moved to C 3/21 as soon as possible.  Thanks everyone for your help.

Was Sgt Frankel an orginial when 196th was formed in Ft Devens. I checked the names on the roster that Ken posted called the 196th yearbook 1966 and his name was not listed with C co 3/21, but according his Vietnam Memorial Wall page he deployed with us on 6/15/66.

The fact that he is not in the yearbook probably has no significance. My Platoon Leader is not in the photo of our Company either, and he was with us right through basic and into Nam.
